I am going to replace the main halyard on my 23.5 . The boat has rf so other than mast raising what function does the jib halyard normally serve . First time with anything other than a hanked on jib . Thanks Mike

hello

the jib halyard raises and keeps your jib raised and tight on the roller furling... with out it, you cannot raise your jib or genoa on the RF...

With CDL furler jib halyard is only used for raising mast.I do use mine to fly a small drifter.Also would come in handy if [heaven forbid} forestay brakes .It could keep mast up.

Are you considering not replacing the jib halyard with a new one, or removing it completely?

I use my jib halyard for the obvious reasons (raising the jib, or the mast) but I have also used it for connecting something to a high point. When we go scalloping, I will bring a solar camp shower. I can't remember exactly what it's called, but the 5gal black plastic bag that has a shower nozzle on the bottom that heats in the sun. The jib halyard is great to hoist it overhead to wash off after swimming in the gulf. I've also used it to hang other things such as laundry, lanterns, and decorations. Yes, most of it isn't mission critical, but that line has come in handy a number of times.

I recently purchased this boat that had been sitting for a few years . It is hard to tell on some things what needs replaced and what is just dirty from sitting . I had planned to replace the mail halyard and a long list of other things . Centerboard line, rudder line rf lines etc . I an trying to decide what has to be done this year and what can wait . I would never completely remove the jib halyard just drying to decide if it can wait until later .Thanks everyone for their input .

MMSailor;

I was heavily involved with this boat from the start and know it well. If you want me to clarify a lot of things, I will call if you will send me your phone number via email, I could explain. In this case, the jib halyard has two main functions. First it is used in mast raising and secondly to raise a hanked on jib.

If adding roller furling, only one, CDI, has it's own internal halyard. This is one reason why I introduced CDI to Hunter in the beginning as I could leave the jib furled on the furler as it had it own internal halyard. This was very handy when trailering a boat like this all the time; otherwise, you would have to with other systems using the jib halyard with the roller furling, take the sail down every time adding a lot of time to tear down and set up.

Hope this answers that question.

hello

I have a harken furler, and I still use my jib halyard to raise and lower the jib sail if you choose to change it or anything.... I also have an emergency jib sail, it has a steel cable as part of the luff... this way If my furler fails for some reason, I can raise the emergency jib by using my spinnaker halyard...

sincerely

Perhaps Crazy Dave can expand on, or confirm this, but if you are trailering the boat and therefore planning on raising and lowering the mast your jib line will most likely be taking the greater load than the main with the weight of the mast. I'd say, if the halyard fails an inspection, change it.

The jib halyard certainly takes stress on raising/lowering the mast. But I suspect the load on both the main and jib halyards is greater when tensioning the jib or mainsail luff using the deck winch. A prudent owner will have good quality, low stretch lines for both halyards.

Kind regards

Hugh

I have seen the jib halyard last for years but with anything else, extra precaution for the jib halyard is essential particularly if the end of the line is threaded back into the line where a shackle goes.
