Anyone who has "invented" a boom tent for the 1994 version of a 23.5 please post some advice and suggestions, and problems encountered. (What material; dimensions; etc.) I have some ideas using PVC thin walled semi-flexible pipe (just put in a sprinkler system) which I will share if you are interested.

Good idea .........BUT

Have never tried a boom tent but have tried several other similar uses for PVC and have found that this stuff is FAR too flexible to be used as any kind of horizontal support (get a 6 or 8 ft sections of it, support at both ends and throw a blanket, quilt, piece of canvas whatever over and you'll see what I mean !!). Also keep in mind that the flexibility of this stuff gets worse with heat ( a friend tried a pool cover with it and wound up with what looked like PVC spagetti !!) The schedule 40 stuff has thicker walls and schedule 80 is even heavier. I'd go get some of the schedule 80 stuff and try it (get just enough to try before you go out and buy 8 miles of the stuff) it might just work. Don't mean to rain on your parade but 'I been there'. Good luck with the project.

Good Advice

Anyone else out there with some more good advice/suggestions/etc. on best practical inexpensive method of getting some shade when anchoring out on a weekend?

Here you go

The previous owner designed one for my 23.5, it works pretty good except for in the rain. I just modified it this weekend and now the rain doesnt collect in it. Here is the basics of the cover: I will have to get the exact measurements at a later time. > the length of the cover is from the mast running the length of the boom. > the width is from life line to life line across. > the support is a 1X2 board running through the forward, middle, and rear sections of the material (there was a slot for the boards sewn in) > On the ends of the boards are small eye bolts facing down to attach bungee cords from the boards to the life line supports. As i said earlier, the cover works well for shade but collects rain. So what i did this weekend is flip the center support board so the eye bolts are facing up and i attached a nylon line from eye bolt to eye bolt and connected the main halyard and added lift to the center. Now it works well. I hope this makes sense to you... i will post some pictures soon so you can take a look. Good luck Greg s/v Passin Wind
