On my 23.5 I usually drop the jib with the dwonhaul, then I reef the main. So my schedule is: (0 to 10) - all sail, (10 to 17) - full main only, (17 plus) - reefed main only. I'm thinking of changing this to reefing the main first. So it would be: (10 to 17) - reefed main and full jib. Then at 17 plus I would drop the jib and be on reefed main only. What's your reefing schedule and experience

Reefing schedule h23.5

Frank, Thats about our sail plan also. In fact we just got back from sailing and hauling out for the year and had the jib up but as the wind built and heel got up to 30 degrees consistantly we dropped the jib and a little later should have put a reef in but we adjusted the traveler and depowered that way. I need to get a wind gauge so I know how much its blowing. I kind of depend on my wife to tell me when its time to reduce sail. Thanks for your post I'm going to print it out for future reference. Not sure about the wind speeds at which I change it is more a factor of my wifes volume. As she increases volume I decrease sail. If she is quiet it is time pull all the sails down and go back to the slip. I go from full sails, to reefed main and jib, then to reefed main only, and then to jib only.

Does anyone change headsails?

When the wind picks up in my 23.5 the first thing I try is change from the 100% jib to the “storm” jib (I think it’s like a 50-60%). Then I reef the main. Next drop the storm jib,(Reefed main only), then just the storm jib. If I still NEED to move, it’s bare poles and aux outboard. I wish I had a wife-o-meter to help make sail decisions. Changing head sails

Bob, We sometimes put on a storm jib. Some of it depends on how long we are going to be out and if its worth the effort. Our storm jib also has one set of reef points but I have never needed to put it in. Rob

23.5 Sail Schedule

We sail with the full sail plan up to about 13 knots and the reef the main. At 18 Knots, we drop the jib. At 20 knots plus, we head for home with the outboard.
