I am interested in the berth arrangements in the 23 & 25. Was the side berth an option or was it in most of the boats around? Can it be done as a retro fit, easily? Is the v-berth on these boats big enough to sleep a couple of 6' adults? Thanks

For the 23

The v-berths on the 23 are not big enough to sleep two regular sized adults; they are just not long enough. I am 5'9" and think the v berth is just long enough to accomodate me alone. It might fit two kids (not mine, they would tend to fight if put that close together). I'm not sure what you mean by "side berth". On my 23, the port sette pulls out to a "double" berth width. It really is no wider than about a standard twin bed width when expanded. The starboard sette does not expand. Oday made the 23 over the years with several different "standard" interior configurations. The bottom line is that the 23 will sleep two adults in camping comfort. Depending on the size of the kids, a small family would also be able to fit aboard.

TIGHT FIT

I'M 6' AND MY GIRLFRIEND IS 5'8". ON MY 25' WE SLEEP WITH ARE HEADS TOWARD THE BOW. WE TRIED IT THE OTHER WAY AND THERE IS NOT ENOUGH ROOM FOR BOTH OF OUR LEGS TO BE OUTSTRETCHED AT THE SAME TIME. IT'S A LITTLE TIGHT SO MAKE SURE YOU BRUSH YOUR TEETH! I REMEMBER SEEING ON THIS SITE SOME TIME AGO SOMEONE WHO CONVERTED THE SETTEES INTO A QUEEN SIZE BED BY MAKING BACK RESTS AND LAYING THEM DOWN THE MIDDLE WHEN THE TABLE IS UP. I'M SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING THAT THIS WINTER.

So Mike

Are you telling me that for comfort would be best to consider sleeping in the settes as singles? Are they both long enough? Otherwise it would be too hard to make one big berth between them? Thanks

One person per bed

Ed, I think Mike is saying the 23 is comfortable for two people if one sleeps in the v-berth and the other in the settee. That's the way my wife and I are most comfortable. Of course the dog spends the whole night running from one to the other wondering why we aren't in one bed. Chris

23 cabin

I've got a 23 and a thin sheet of plywood slides out from both settees to meet in the middle (removable planks run abeam provide support) and create a large sleeping area easily capable of sleeping two six foot adults (although I'm not quite six feet and my wife is 5'10"). We sleep athwartships and have plenty of room. The vberth is definitely too small for adults. It's good for my two youngsters though.

Not the Ritz

Yes, the most comfortable way for two adults to spend the night on my 23 is to have one in the v-berth and one in the double. The cabin sette is long enough, and the v-berth is ok if you are not much taller than 5'10". I am intrigued with the description of the 23 where the port and starboard settees both expand and meet in the middle. It really is just a sheet of plywood that slides out from under the cushion, so there is no technical reason that it couldn't be fairly easily retrofitted onto a boat. However, you would need to consider at least two things: first, expansion of the berths to make one big berth cuts off access from the v-berth to the companionway. Not necessarily bad if you don't mind guests or kids walking over you while you sleep, or if they are small and nimble enough to get out of the forward hatch. The second consideration that comes to mind are the cushions. I first looked into replacing the worn and dated coverings on my cushions when I bought the boat. I quickly found that the cost approached what I had paid for the whole boat. If you do create this new almost queen size berth, you will need to make new cushions for it, and find a place to store them aboard. Not insurmountable problems, but something to consider.

Todd's cabin

Todd is this "mid" berth something you added? I got the impression that only one sette slide out. THis sounds more like the Starwind 223 set up and would be perfect. Thanks

RE: Not the ritz

Well Mike it would just be the wif and me. But I had thought about this option for other boats that have you sleeping over the porta pot. (not that I haven't ever sleep with my head over the head but I was younger then GRIN) I figure if the v-berth is too small to make a sleeping area that would be a good place to store the cushions. Still I always hated having to make a bed up

I purchased the boat used with this system already in place. It wouldn't surprise me if it was custom work because the cross supports are clearly home-made and not provided by the manufacturer. It really is a great system though and seems as though it would be very easy to replicate.

This set-up definitely requires the kids to walk over us in the morning, but the comfort at night has been worth it so far. Regarding the cushions, I can't speak for all ODay 23's but ours has 1/2 length cushions located under the slide-out sink to starboard and the slide out stove-top to port. We just take those two cushions out and put them together to fill the space left when we slide the starboard settee out into the middle. Works well and is comfortable so we haven't had to buy new cushions. The previous owner may have added these 1/2 cushions, but they look original.
