23-2 boom end conumndrum

When I bought my 1983 O'day 23, the outhaul & topping lift were a mess of frayed lines tied together in odd ways. Since I had the mast down last month I decided to re-do them. Now that I have dug into it, I see why the previous owners did not fix them.

The fitting on the end of the boom has 3 pulley sheaves in it. It looks like the lines in question went around these sheaves, through holes in the boom end fitting, forward inside the boom through holed in a second casting about 16" from the end of the boom, then back some how. This gives each line a multi-part purchase without all the extra line hanging around, but how in the heck do I get the new lines through all that?

I am (hopefully) attaching pictures that may clarify what I am saying. I have more pictures if you want to see some detail.

Does the fitting in the boom move? If yes, can you slide it out the aft end of the boom and work on it then?

Maybe a stiff, long piece of wire to pull line through with? Electricians snake might work as well. Chief

The piece in the boom does not move. It had 2 screws & 2 rivets holding it in; the heads on all 4 screws were gone when I bought the boat.

I can fish a snake (or fish tape as we call them) in through the holes but no way to get to the other side to attache line or fish back through.

Is this a common set up on O'days?

I do not have this set up on mine it is a 1980. What end are we seeing when we look down the boom?

Sounds like a complicated set up. This is the end cap on the 25.

Top hole is for topping lift and forward hole is for out haul. Maybe D&R Marine will have something to replace yours with that is similar.

The photo shows how I attached a block for the topping lift to turn it forward to a horn cleat on the boom.
It also shows how I attached a block and line to use as an out haul. Since that photo was taken I installed two blocks and the line goes to a horn cleat on the boom to give me 3-1 purchase. (3-1?)

Scott confirms, you really don't need the internal set up on a 23.

That end fitting setup (on the 23) looks like a previous owner upgrade, I have never seen an O'DAY 23 with that setup, perhaps on a larger O'DAY from the mid-late 1980's, but not the 23 (possible that some of the last 23s built around 1985 were set up like that?)

The picture is from the stern looking forward. I agree it is overkill, & I like the suggestion of finding a more normal one if it will fit the boom. Anyone know of one for sale anywhere?

This boat had several anomalies that appear to be factory - halyards internal to the mast, the funky boom set up, traveler for the main sheet.

Spend some time and use the internal setup on the boom. In the end it'll be worth it. I ordered the boom ends from http://www.rigrite.com/ and converted my stock boom to internals. But that's me.

I checked the Rigrite site & they don't show this set up either. They do have the standard fitting, I may at least price it.

Even if I wanted to use it, I still can't figure out how to get the lines run through & back on the part inside the boom.
