just bought the boat and noticed a few things that i have questions on.. this post is only one of a million..should there be a light at the top of the mast?? there sure aint one there now...hmmm maybe thats why that pelican was glowing....and yes it has the other lights at the bow and stern...

It's probably there

But the bulb is out. You need a special bosun's chair and someone (or two) to hoist you up to look at it. However, it would be safer and easier to check it next time you dismast. If you're only sailing or motoring during the day, don't worry about it until you take the mast down for some other reason.

Take the mast down?

We are talking C-22 here right? So take the stick down and see if theres a light. If there isn't, you can easily install one. If you don't plan on anchoring overnight, why bother? Mast head lights are only for anchoring and illegal to use for any other purpose.

Grandfathered?

As a 1974 boat, I believe you are grandfathered, as the masthead anchor light came along later. You probably have a steaming light 1/2 way up the mast for use under power, white in color. Note that it is not an anchoring or riding light. For that function just hang a 360degree light from the headstay about 4 ft off of the deck. The red/green on the deck and the steaming light is what I have on my 1980 Oday 22 and it all works for me. Ted

I believe Ted's right

My 27 doesn't have a light on top, only the "masthead" (steaming light midway up mast at the spreaders). I just hang a nice little Weems & Plath oil lamp off the boom when I anchor out (not often). I've read of some folks buying little solar powered lawn lights from Lowe's for the same purpose. LaDonna

Cat.. 22 lights

I have also purchased a 70's 22ft Cat. All it has are the lights on the bow & stern. There are no lights on the mast anywhere. I am trying to retore the boat. The cabin is a mess and there where holes in the hull but it is usuable now

Lights for the Catalina 22

You can get a masthead light at West Marine. If you are planning on an overnight you should have one when you anchor.

Alternate Approach

A cheap alternative that worked for me was to buy a clear-lensed marker light, mounted on an L-shaped bracket, for less than 2 bucks at Advance Auto Parts. I pop-riveted it to the masthead using stainless rivets, sealed all connectors, greased the bulb base, and have used it for 5 years with no problem. It's a good idea to check its operation any time the mast is down, and to carry spare bulbs and lenses for all lights on the boat.
