I would like to buy some mast parts for my 222 on line, they say for Damco mast only not z-spar. how do i tell the the two apart ? bob

Hi bob (neighbor) You just may be the closest 222 O'Day owner I know of. (I am near the next exit off the Ohio Turnpike west of Fremont.) I will have owned my 1986 222 almost a year now. She was a southern belle as I found her in southern Tenn almost in Alabama. In fact "Getaway" was registered in Bama. I sail western Erie and the Bass islands. My mast I believe is the Damco made one. Mine still has the Mfg sticker. Although "Getaway" is lay ed up for the winter along side my home. I do have various pixs of mast and boat I can e-mail to you. Sailing is NOT a matter of life or death, it is more important than that. Regards, Chuck Rothert

Hey Chuck, I live in Sharon Center, about 30 miles south of cleve. i rent a slip at edgewater marina just west of of downtown. I've had my 222 for 3 seasons, she is one of the silver anniversary models of 1984. nice boat and under the correct conditions can sail with some 30 footers. this fall i clipped a tree branch with her on the trailer with the mast up, cracked one of the spreader bases. thus needing to buy mast equipment. I'll have someone weld the stainless base as a spare. I like the 222 they are so over built. other boats that same event would've dropped the mast for sure dameging who knows what. bob sklenka@adelphia.net

Bob, Years ago when I lost my mast, I had this rigging store get me another Z Spar mast. They seem to have most of the Z Spar mast extrusions and you may be able to recognize the parts on this site if you have Z Spar. My 1986 O'Day 222 came with Z Spar and it has their label on the mast. However, when I replaced my mast, I had this outfit make a few drastic changes to the mast like; a Stainless Steel mast hinge Tabernacle plate, and the Jib Halyard rerouted to exit near the Mainsheet on the mast, instead of a small sheave at the bottom of the mast(internal halyards), a "steaming light" installed about 2/3s of the way up the mast, along with some heavier gauge lower stays. A lot of the mast extrusions for Z Spar were made in France and they weren't the greatest. Especially the hinged mast step which is made of cast aluminum and can break very easy. Anyway, a good rigging outfit can pretty much do anything that needs to be done on a mast, and not necessarily this outfit that I'm giving you the link to. Good luck with that.

Bob, I'm curious as to whether your 1984 O'Day 222 has a compression post in the cabin to brace the mast step? My 86 OD 222 has one that is attached to the sink post and attaches to the two starboard bolts that hold the mast Tabernackal. Just curious. Some of the earlier models of the 222 didn't come with this Stainless Steel support strut. I received an email from a guy in RI with an 84 222, that doesn't have one.

Yes on the stainless strut, a little questionable on its value but like I said they are so over built. I believe that the boom and the mast width are the same as a 25’. The 222 is a lot different then the 22. Not saying that you are referring to a 22 not having a support post just strange.. I’m guess all of the o’day three digit boats are different more then just looks.. Nice boats tuff that they went out of biz. Bob

bob, does your HIN # begin with XDY ? Fall River Main.. " Getaway's " begins with SUR Santa Anna Ca, made on the left coast. Maybe that's why the Damco spar and boom..???

Chuck, I received your pictures, boat looks good and I was able to ID your mast as the same as mine. That will help allot. My boat is still at the marina (on her trailer of course) I will get her hull number maybe this weekend. Thanks for your help Happy sails to you Bob
