22 foot Mac Owner needs help

I bought this Mac 22 from a guy with no sailing knowledge. It needs a new rudder. I am going to make a tip-up with plywood and aluminum. I have no idea how to rig the main sheet. There is a double block on the end of the boom and a clam cleat that swings 360 on port side at the rear on the deck. I would be willing to start from scratch. Thanks for any help. John

Well, you need a single block on the starboard rear. Start your mainsheet on the port side, tying it off to the eye on the swivel. Then through the top of the fiddle block on the boom, then through the starboard block, back through the fiddle block (lower), through the top of the block on the port side, out through bottom and through the cam cleat. Clear as mud? There are diagrams posted in the older posts. Go to search and look for them there. Enjoy!!!

Here is a picture of the setup on our old Mac venture 17.. not the greatest picture but you should get the idea. Ours had single blocks, yours has doubles.. just follow Daves directions above and you will be fine. The picture also shows the stock rudder, which I believe was similar to the one used on the 22 (it's been a while since I've seen one so I may be wrong).

Thanks for the rigging help. I am missing the block on the starboard side but I think I get it. Now if anyone can offer an idea on making a tip-up rudder I am all ears. I am thinking multiple layers of exterior plywood and aluminum. Not sure of the measurements. The boat came with a very week home made rudder. Thanks again for the rigging help. John P

Remember that a rudder is not flat...... it is a foil, just like the center board. It should be aerodynamic in shape, with no flat surfaces, a leading edge that cleaves the water aside and a tapered trailing edge that will discourage cavitation.
