Went out on my 76 catalina that i bought yesterday, (my first sailer) and went for a swimm when i look at the keel i noticed it was up.. i asked my mate to crank it all the way up and it did not move.. then crank it all the way down. agien it did not move. it seems to be stuck at 6" from tip to hull position.. any one ever had this problem.. ive taken it out twice so far once under high winds about 20 mph winds...(i know crazy wont do that agien.) with know problems. is it a big problem or sould i not worry till i take it out for the season.

thank you

on my 25 the keel was stuck all the way up. ended up just replacing with a new winch and cable. not that that helps you but just a thought; nice knowing it's new and secure.

Trying to sail without your centerboard is asking for trouble. I wouldn't put the sails up without the centerboard working.

I guess the obvious is - did you release the locking bolt? OK, you probably did. If not, then make sure the winch cable is fully wound in to hold the keel up, release the bolt and winch down.

Otherwise, it is probably a job for a pro unless you are sure that you have the knowledge to do the job safely.

Only motor in fair conditions with the keel up, sailing like that is asking for a capsize.
