Got to see a 216 at the Annapolis Sailboat Show today. Glad to report that it seemed bigger than I expected. Almost bought one, but my wife who was not with me had doubts. She ended up going to a local dealer who showed one to her and she too was pleased that it wasn't as small as she thoughtit would be (we currently sail an h26). One question/concern for 216 owners. Do you get water in the cabin? That funky little mast boot just doesn't look like it will keep H2O out. The 216 at the local shop had water in the cuddy and the dealer said it's an issue. 216 Leaks
That boot works pretty well but you must seal it tightly around the mast and put silicone inside the sail slot on the mast so that the water does not run down the track. Additionally, many of us had leaks around the chain plates where we had to remove and re-bed them. Since doing this three years ago, we've not had any water in the cuddy at all.

cabin leaks
We bought a 216 3 years ago. It did not have a mast boot. We keep it on a mooring and it leaks when it rains. This is a minor inconvieance. Usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes with a sponge to get rid of the watter. I have not seen the mast boot. I would like to get one and see how it works. Does any one have an idea how to get this mast boot? Is it available through Hunter? Gary

Ernie, thanks for the report on successfully keeping water out. Gary, call Hunter or your dealer. I'm sure they must sell it. I don't tolerate water in the boat. We've been successful keeping our h26 bone dry 99% of the time. Not a hint of mold or mustiness.

Ron, I have an '04 model H-216 and still haven't quite solved the rain water issue. My boats docked at a marina 8-months of the year. My Hunter dealer has been very helpful and given me several different designs of mast boot for free. I've also put sealent in the sail track. During a heavy blow like last weekend's nor-easter I got about a gallon of rainwater in the hull. My guess is the water is blowing under the hatch and I've got to work on it some more. My current work-around is to use towels. Not perfect, but this boat works for me and it's a minor inconvenience. Since my dock is at a secure marina I've learned to leave the top cuddy board off for ventilation. I also have a 36" manual pump bailer in my dock box. After a heavy storm it takes me about 30 minutes dry her out to my satisfaction. When I pull her out in Dec I intend to do some experimenting in my back yard to get the cabin water tight. Considering most of my dock mates were doing the same thing I was over the weekend, I've come to the conclusion that those of you that have water tight boats from storm weather are very fortunate.

This might work
Years ago, I had a Catalina 27 that allowed water to enter "through and/or around" the hatch boards. I had a canvas cover made that attached to the top of the hatch and along the sides of the cockpit opening covering the hatch boards. Worked like a charm.
