Neil, I think by 1980 they were putting in stainless keel bolts..This seemed to start not long after our boats were built..maybe as early as late 1978 from the discussions I recall in the C-30 Yahoo list and maybe chatting with Max, but I am not sure.
aewirth - what hull # are you considering? That may help to tell? Additionally, one quick way is to check the bilge to see if the bolts are stainless.
BTW - I also have the original Atomic 4 in my C-30 and prefer it over a noisy, sooty, noisy, less cylinders, noisy, rough, noisy diesel for a lot of reasons.

If you find a 1980 C-30 equipped with an original diesel, it will be the 5411, which is 11HP wide open. That motor is undersized on my step-father's Tartan 3000 at 8,000 lbs. displacement (2,000+ lbs.. less than a C-30.)
