Hello all -
First post here. My wife and I are looking the buy a Hunter 22. We are told it's are 2011 and I don't have reason to doubt since it is the large cockpit fiberglass boat. But, the VIN ends in 08 and I'm curious if anyone has some insight as to why this is.
Thanks for reading.

2011 but the dealer seemed confused as to why there was an 08 at the end of the VIN, doesn't give this newbie buyer a warm fuzzy toward the purchase.

I was going to say that if the HIN states a 2008, then it's got to be a 2008.. but then I started thinking about when the new 22's came out.. weren't they introduced just last year (in 2011)? If so, then a 2008 model would be kind of unique! Are you sure it's a 22?!? Do you have the complete HIN?

I would suggest contacting Hunter and giving them the HIN.. it's not an old boat, so they should have records on hand about it's production and could most likely clarify the situation.

Cheers,
Brad

Generally there is either one or two locations where the Hull# number is locatd in the boat. In the companionway drain forward see if you can see it there. If not,
send an email to customerservice with the specific hull# number you see on the hull and they can tell you what it is. Also, ask the dealer for the MSO from Hunter and that should tell you as well. Years past, I did see some hull numbers put on wrong but do check that out first as it will be an issue with insurance and state registration with the wrong hull number. Keep us posted.

Reading a hull number is easy for example HUN22108H910. HUN is the mfg while 22 designates the model. Then 108 is the acutal hull number. A9 represents when the hull was laid for this it would indicate August of 2009 and then 10 would be for the model year.

The 22 came out in that time period of 2008 or a little later.

the 22 indicates the length, not the Hunter model designation-so the "22" would be correct for the 216, which was made in "08. the Hunter 22 came out last year-you can tell them apart easily because the 216 has the inboard vara rudder and the new 22 has a stern mounted rudder. the 216 is molded from ABS with a fiberglass core, while the 22 is conventional fiberglass layup. there are other differences-more sail area for the 22 because it's 900 lbs heavier, small portlites in the cuddy cabin, and the decals are different!

Most of the time chuckwayne is correct that the model reflects the length but sometimes it does not which is why I say it refers to the model of the boat which by the way manufacturers and Coast Guard will tell you the same thing that it represents the model following the mfg.

Pretty sure it's a 2011 Hunter22, just curious as to why the HIN ends in an 08. Thanks for all the great responses I'll let you know if we launch.

If you purchase the boat, you will need to get the hull number corrected or determined as to what it is. It will affect you when you go to register and insurance. Please keep us posted.

Dealer says, Hunter is going to issue a new MSO for the boat. Not sure if this makes my feel any better, but at least everything will be consistent. Pretty sure we want the boat, so as long as the paper trail won't cause us hassle, I think we are in. Thanks again for all the replies. We'll post when we take delivery!

Also make sure about the Mfg statement of Origin (title to dealer from mfg.) that the VIN num bers agree as well.

Well, we got it!
Dealer got all the numbers to match the actual year of make and matching HIN.
Gotta go, off to the lake for a sail!!
