I have a new Hunter 25 and the furler sail has no uv protection sewn into it. It does say on the sail that it is uv protected, but should I have one sewn on. Has any one done this and is it really neccesary. The boat is moored all season long. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Mike, are you sure there is no extra cloth sewn...

onto the jib trailing edge and foot? Every new furler sail I've seen has at least a white UV cover sewn onto the jib. It'll look like sail material but it will protect the rolled up jib for several years.

Move

Move to upstate New York and you won"t have to worry about it, we never see the sun here any more.

UV Protection

Mike, I have a Hunter 25. I was told that the sail has a UV protection sprayed on it. If you are thinking of adding a protective piece to the headsail, I wouldn't bother. It will cost you more in the long run. Wait until you need another headsail.

Barry is right

I checked on the cost to sew in the cover locally. It is about half the cost of buying a new sail with a cover already sewn in. My boat should be a good test of how well the UV protectent on the sail works. There is killer sun here in Texas.

Thanks everyone

Thanks everyone for the input. I guess I'll be spending the extra money on electronics instead.

My Headsail UV Protection the same

Mike, our 2004 boat came from the factory with Doyle sails. The headsail is similar to yours in that the UV seems built-in to the white cloth. I had a sailmaker look at it. He said that the UV protection will be fine, and that the threading will deteriorate first from UV, as is apparently common with all sails. Since we also have issues with air-borne contaminants (airplane soot and general urban smog fallout), I had them build a sock from sunbrella that fits over the furled sail. We raise it with the spinnaker halyard. It cost around $200 bucks, and should help prolong sail replacement.
