My new Hunter 33 does not have a diesel generator. Hunter said it is not an option because ther is not enough space. Does anyone have any other answers? Is there a generator on the market that would fit on the 33 and run the air conditioner?

Generator

John, I have a Hunter 340 and I too have been contemplating installing a generator. I think the issue is noise and placement, more than size. It certainly is possible to put a generator in our size boats. By the way, my boat is in a slip in Biloxi, but I live in Baton Rouge. ajp

340 Generator

I fitted a Panda 4.5 KWatt diesel generator into the space at the foot of the aft bunk, by removing the shelf, stiffening the hull with a horizontal mounting plate and installing a new teak front panel. Bill

weight

Trying to fit a genset on a 33 is going to be tough. Space is certainly an issue but weight is the critical problem. Even a small generator with a cabinet and associated hardware will probably weigh in at 250lbs plus. On a 33 footer almost any resonable place to put it will seriously effect how the boat sits on its lines.

I had one in a 1980 H33

Had a 3.5 kw diesel generator in starboard cockpit locker in this boat. While it was an older model, it was not that heavy. It did cause the boat to list to the right, I put an 8d battery on the left side of the boat, which made it ride lower in water, but evened things up. I removed it after a couple of years because on a 33 ft boat, running the generator, no matter how much sound deadening material I had around it, made a good bit of noise and a noticable vibration - I decided I would just use the air conditioner when I was at the dock and installed fans everywhere in cabin for use when anchored out. Personal choice, I would rather be warm than hear it running.

An easy solution

I solved the problem of too little battery power by taking along a Honda 1000i portable generator that can sit solidly in the cockpit and on the transon seat. Works well. But costs $700.
