The anchor chain jammed around the windlass on my 2002 Hunter 410 this past summer. I got it free but every time I press the deck button up or down I just get a "clunk" and no movement.

Any thoughts?

Welcome to the site.

If you can supply the make and model of the windlass, it would go a long ways towards helping to diagnose the problem. The genius on this particular windlass may not have an H410

I assume the chain is off and it is still clunking? If so, you will probably need to take it apart and look at the gears.

Have you checked...

the circuit breaker underneath the nav table?

I believe the windlass is a Sprint-Atlantic B. There was no manual with the Boat's papers. And yes....the circuit breaker is beneath the nav station

In regards to checking the gears.
1. I downloaded a Sprint Atlantic manual someone posted in response to a Hunter 420 windlass question as it is exactly like mine.
2. I presume I will have to remove it from under the deck. There is an access in the forward head.
3. I have NEVER done anything like taking a windlass apart before. Any suggestions or tips?

I think you can take the cover off from above. The only thing below the deck is the motor.

Thanks Sailgunner. I did remove the drum and what I believe is the clutch...cleaned and greased but did not see any gears????

When mine did the "cluck" thing earlier in the year it was the motor itself (one of the magnets had come loose and broken). Lewmar still had 6 earlier in the year.

I will try to remove motor. I presume i can try to turn the shaft manually to test it

Winch Handle

You should be able to turn the windless with the winch handle on top
of one of the holes on the drum from top side.
Also below deck is another type of switching transformer that all the wires
go to from the deck up and down buttons and than to the motor.
But that is how my lewmar windless is setup is on my 07 H-36.

It is pretty easy. Remove the motor and gear box as an assembly then take the motor off. You should be able to turn the motor shaft and the gear box (the motor will turn kind of tight due to the magnets).

Hint - tape a plastic bag etc under the assembly first so that if/when you down something it slides into the head and nto down into that hole

clip

Just 4 bolts hold the motor under to the upper part of windless but some may
have a C clip on the bottom of shaft where the shaft comes out the bottom
of the motor and mine did not and motor slide down off.
Some times the shaft is frozen to the bearing but mine was not.

Thanks guys. I am headed to my marina, Lighthouse Landing Jan 4 for belated Christmas party. Will try to work on the windlass then. Let me know ifnI can ever help you all with emergency medical issues or training. That is what I do. Merry Christmas to all.
