2001 Odyssey

Hi all,

Just woke up from a deep sleep and had that "Whoa", Déjà vu feeling. Since we pulled into a slip over Thanksgiving we've been able to access WiFi so I had done upgrades to certain files and spent time trying to get comfortable with them. Well after a heated argument between me and Cortana of Windows 10 last weekend, I pulled her plug. I also pulled the plug on Open CPN 4.0 going back to the older 2.5.

Things were now running smoothly on the old laptop. However my wife's Christmas present came, iPad, and we decided to get it running before the holiday rush at Apple support. We aren't that savvy so we had support helping us over the phone turning systems on. You might know the drill, iTunes, iCloud, Bluetooth, Siris, etc. Well I only wanted iLunch and iBeer to work as my wife continued with the start-up help from support.

Four hours later my wife put the iPad down and I saw my chance. I quietly tapped the screen and did the swipe but couldn't open it without a code or fingerprint. Unsure of how 007 got the fingerprints from a wine glass, I just asked the wifey to open the iPad (got the look).

My first app was a navigational program and I went through the prompts. There was a question about opening up a FB connection and I logged in. It didn't seem to work but the program turned on and I played with it for a short while. I then thought the pain in my arm was getting worse so I gave the iPad back to my wife and got a tissue for the bleeding where her fingernails dug in.

Then came the scream. She had been trying to either load her contacts or sync them from her MacBook for the last two hours and now they were gone. Unfortunately mine appeared in her contact list. I couldn't reverse it, couldn't close it, and couldn't offer any help on getting the undo to work. I was told to go stand on the dock. So grabbing a beer I went over to talk with our neighbor varnishing his handrails.

By nightfall nothing was fixed and emails were sent to support for Monday morning. The evening meal was quiet so after I did the dishes I grabbed a book and read in the rear berth.

In the middle of the night I started thinking about how my wife was asking Siris for help. Then the questions morphed into how the two of them could do well without my help. Then if the boats chart plotter's Bluetooth had been turned on, they could control the boat and even take over all the other systems. I woke in a cold sweat and got out of bed. Whoa Déjà vu again. Does Siris know about Cortana?

Tomorrow I begin the resistance movement, don't upgrade. Can SBO print the T shirts?

Lesson 1: Never, EVER, login with FB. Before you know it, FB has posted what you had for lunch and that a raccoon slept in your dock locker last night. And everyone in your contact list has received an email saying "Connect with All U Get on Facebook." That app is the spawn of the devil.

Next thing you know, FB has sold your house, stolen your wife, and posted a photo of your cat to the internet.

FB is where I draw the line. I'm already on enough BBS and forums right now. And I've seen how much FB sucks my wife's time. I think I saw my picture on her page with a "Have you seen me?" caption. oops.

All,

You just stuck a nerve with me pal.
I've been involved with Windows since 1984, what we used to call the, "Dark Ages."

I am the unofficial help desk support for about 50 friends, family & so on.
I use Mikogo & Skype to fix their computer problems from my home.

I have one killer-bad-ass PC & 2 laptops with a total of 7 monitors.
I have gone thru almost 30 years with different versions of Windows.
Here is my take on Win 10.

Upgrading from Win 8.1 goes smoothly. From Win 7, maybe not so smoothly.
But this is not what bothers me. And yes, I killed off Cortana & Edge.
I use IE 11.

The downsides of Win 10 that I have found are:
We have no control of what updates to receive, MS has taken that away. So,
who knows what they are loading on our machines. I will bet alot of you do not want some secret updates as they may be stealing God knows what info from you.

Then there is having to learn a new way of navigating to get to what you knew for years. It's like learning the wheel all over again & as usual, Windows goes backwards into the future. They should have offered the option to remain with the classic look which was an option in earlier versions but no, they are NOW competing with other tablet competitors.

My PC's are a tool, I don't play online games or social network. Sites like Facebook & Google collect your PC info, they track your search preferences & don't you know they sell this out to companies to use.
Look at your email after you visit some sites & watch incoming emails based on your preferences start showing up.
You've lost your privacy man. What else have they embedded deep in your computer to pull who knows what info from you? I did locate a fix to force Win 10 to upload only the updates you want to decide on but, I have not tried this to date.
For those of you that are more adventurous, here's the link I found. I only ask that you let me know if it worked.

Be smart & keep private what little privacy you have left to protect.
ps: I told you ALL, you struck a nerve pal...............
