I went to check on my boat today which is covered for the winter with the mast up. I discovered that both of the mast struts were disengaged from the upper mast strut brackets! I cannot imagine how this happened. Everthing else appears to be in order. Has anyone experienced this before or have any idea how this happened?

As a former dealer and the first to introduce that boat, that happenned to me a time or two. If you are using a regular nut sometimes with a lock washer, take it off and use a nylon locking style nut. If you are still concerned, put another locking nylon nut against the other and tighten together. Chances of that coming off are much slimmer.

Happened to mine

I had that happen to one of my mast struts. On mine though, it wasn't that the nuts came loose, but that the weld actually broke where the nut is welded into the tube. A trip to my local welder and 20 bucks fixed it. Mine came with nylon locking nuts. Without them, they are sure to loosen again as there is a lot of movement there.

After further investigation, the welds holding the nuts to the top of both of my struts broke. This apparently happened at the same time with the boat simply sitting on the trailer.

When mine broke it had been in my slip for a few weeks. I just found it with one strut laying on the deck. I haven't had a problem since I had it welded. The other side seems fine.

The other weld to check is the one that holds the rudder to the steering rod plate. That one broke on my boat too. I now have that drilled and bolted. Overall, other than a few things like this, I have had very few issues with my boat. It's possible that the rudder weld break was caused by contact with a passing boat as my boat was parked in the slip rudder out. I'm just glad that one didn't happen when sailing.
