How much should you subtract form a 36' sailboat with a 20 year old diesel engine raw water cooled. Or how much will it cost to have it replaced with a new one. Do they make a fresh water cooling exchanger for small diesels for sailboats?:deadhorse:

Are you sure there is not a fresh water side with anti-freeze? I don't know of any that are only raw water cooled.
What manufacturer and model of engine? A decent used diesel would run about 3000 and the PITA factor of 4000 for a deduction of 7000. You aren't sailing anywhere without that engine to get you in and out.

There are after market exchanger kits available, Sen-Dure is one company that makes them, and I think some of the OEM exchangers come from them. The hardest part is you have to drive a second pump somehow. I have heard that running AF through an old salty raw water cooled engine can cause problems with scale breaking loose and plugging things up. Doesn't really sound like a viable option.
20 years is not too old for a diesel, provided it was properly maintained and not abused. What make is it, and are parts still available? I recently had to scrap my 45 year old Albin diesel as there just aren't any parts anymore.

What makes you think something needs to be "subtracted"?

A 20 yr old well maintained diesel is preferable to a 5 yr old poorly maintained one.

If the boat is 20 yrs old, you have bigger issues with which you should be concerned.

Well maintained diesel, would warrant a $Zero deduction, 20 year old engine is not a problem.

20 years not a problem for us

Our 23 year old Yanmar gave us 10 years of good service before we replaced it with a used Yanmar with 50 hours on it. And, it was clear that it had been used hard when we bought the boat.

If it looks good, put a test sail in your contract, and take a diesel mechanic along. If it will perform OK, get you near hull speed in flat water with some reserve, and the mechanic says it's OK, then it's a non-issue! And that would be the expected outcome for most diesels at 20 years.

Re: 20 years not a problem for us

when i bought our 1991 H 42 4 years ago the yanmar had over 4000 hours on it- i was worried. I had a specific engine survey done before purchase and the mechanic ended up telling me - it was fine- no difference between mine and any other well maintained Yanmar. I have now had it 4 years, done another 400 hours and it still runs like a swiss clock- uses VERY little oil and has NEVER missed a beat- its all about its past- is it a fashion boat , or a PASSION boat??? - passion boats are owned by people who are obsessive about their boats and simply do the right thing , always and do whatever is needed on the boat- when it is needed. I looked at 8 different H42's and ended up buying the oldest one i looked at PURELY because it was very clearly a passion boat- and it still is!

I agree with Eian. My 1991 Yanmar 4JH2-TE 62 HP diesel on my P42 has 6550 hours and runs like new. I'll be shocked if I don't get at least 10,000 hours out of it.
