I have a 430 1996 Hunter which we sail from spain to the Caribbean.Problem our Geni died and we got a very expensive overhaul done. It lasted about 6 hours. The result is we are sailing from island to island with out a fridge because our fridge is mains only.We can buy ice in places. There are not too many places where we can plig in.I was thinking of converting the fridge to 12v by fitting a new plate and leaving the existing mains installation in place for when were in adock. We can buy the equipment easily. I would like to hear from anybody who has done this on a 430,where they mounted the compressor ets. Regards, Gerry Griffin Saoirse Grenada

Not exactly sure what you mean by ".....our fridge is mains only." If your compressor is driven by the auxiliary then you need to add an alternate source for power. A good running engine would certainly be helpful for other things. A wind driven generator is probably the most efficient and can be used for all onboard electronics. Solar panels would be another source but would require large efficient panels to do the job. The easiest solution might be to add a cold plate as backup powered by either solar or wind generator. Maintaining cold that was started by your mechanical system should be an easy addition.

Hi Alan

What I meant "by mains only" was that the fridge and freezer are powered by mains power,in our case 230v since it's made for the European market. This I can only get either by plugging into shore power or running the Geni.,assuming it's working/ My Geni is not working at the moment thought when we get to Trinidad I hope to get it running. It's not easy to plug in here as on the Islands there are few marinas so we spend a lot of time at anchor. We have been buying ice in block or cube form anywhere we can get it. I have a 12v alternator 80 amp from my engine and also from my wind geni.gives me about 3 amps in moderate wind and up to 5.5 amps in a blow. I was looking for advise from someone who has modified either the frdge or freezer to 12v dc. in a 430 Legend as it's not easy to access the inside with pipes etc. Regards, Gerry...Saoirse

12v or engine driven compressor

Assuming you have a well insulated ice box, you could either convert to a 12 compressor or an engine driven one. Some even have both. WM has them.

Inverter

You haven't mentioned the rated power consumption of compressor. But I think the easiest way would be to install a 12v to 230v 50HZ inverter. If you have 80Amp alternator plus wind gen. then you should have enough juice to charge the house bank and power the fridge.
