Nick...... I have had a Nissan 8 HP 2 stroke for 4 years now on my O'Day 25 and have no complaints. Really good dependable motor. It seems however that long shaft's are in short supply. You don't say what kind/length of boat you are going to put in on...... but in MOST cases.... you will want a long shaft. Also, 2 strokes are banned/going to be banned in some locations.... so it's important to check with your local authorities to see what the law's are in your neck of the woods. ken in sacramento

Nick, If you like the small Nissan 2 stroke outboard, you will also like the Mariner and Yamaha units. They were all made by Tohatsu!

Getting scarce

there was a similar post a couple of months ago, and I looked on the internet for all of the usual sources of 2 strokes; no one (Defender, West, etc.) had any. I too have a Nissan 8 hp 2 stroke (long shaft electric start). Paid about $1400 for it from Defender about three years ago. Never a problem. Great motor.

You could also try buying a Garhauer

dinghy motor lift, which we've found to be least expensive and probably the best uilt, altho Forespar and other make them. Costs about $175 and you can use your old motor.

2 stroke Mercs made by Tohatsu

You better hurry and see if any dealers have any left over 2 stroke engines. All manufacturers begining in 2006 discontinued making small (under 25HP) 2 stroke outboard engines. Their 4 stroke counterparts are from 10-15 lbs heavier. If unable to locate one you will have to go to the used engine market.

Outboards

Check out the 2 HP, 4 stroke Honda. I had one on my 15' Potter sailboat. It would easily drive the boat at hull speed (about 4.5 knots). LIGHT, STARTS EASILY, AIR COOLED AND VERY SMOOTH. It's the only outboard I would put on a 2-4 man inflatable. Novelman
