What fuel filter would you suggest for my Tohatsu 8hp 2 Stroke? I am converting away from the 3 gal portable fuel tank to a 9.5 gal permanent tank. Since I will be filling directly from fuel docks now vs jerry cans, I want to have a better fuel filter and a water separator added inline.

Since this is a 2 stroke, it will have oil mixed in while going through the filter, I assume that will screw with some filters.

I used a Racor gas water seperator. Placed it where I could drain easily. Good luck

Shouldn't be a problem at all. Most of the 2-stroke outboards I see down here, including mine, are premixed in the tank and the pre-mixed fuel therefore goes through the filter.

I'd suggest the Unikas fuel filter for that.

Hands down, the best one I know of for that sort of application.

Easy to view water in the bowl (and very simple to drain that H2O out), easily replaced filters without a mig mess, internal magnet to attract and hold metal particulate [and it can be cleaned/replaced easily].

The red o-ring that is inside the bowl, floats to indicate that there is water that needs to be evacuated. Simply place a cup under the drain to catch fluid, turn the thmb screw et voila!!

Not new, been a round for a while. Battle tested.

this one.

small, all metal, so harder to damage. good for skiffs.

-I assume its for the dingy, otherwise get the larger clear bottom racor type.

Not for the dinghy, auxilary is an outboard...
EDIT, just noticed it says for engines with high working fuel pressures, which does not include outboards, they have very low fuel pressure (negative pressure in fact). not sure if this would work....

is this the one you mean? http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|311|302335|107095|699530&id=133792

It says that it's for outboards only, inboards must use the metal bowl. I am installing the filter inside the lazerette near the tank, so I assume that falls under the same classification as an inboard?

hmm, looks like a good option, only concern is the same as mentioned above, the racor description says you're required to use a metal bowl for inboard installs, and I expect my install will be considered an inboard for that purpose.

maybe I could install the filter where the old tank resides now, that would be an external install and certainly apply the same requirements as any other outboard. That also allows me to safely drain the bowl without venting fuel into the lazerette, and easily check the filter while under way.

The fuel line already passes through into the lazerette from the tank on it's way to the engine, so I would only need to add a route from the new tank, and can reuse the old routing.

Ok, Pros and Cons of the two filters listed?

We use that one on our Mac, but it is outside...

...since as has been mentioned with the glass bowel it should not be inside a compartment.

Ruth also .....

...sewed up a cover to protect it from UV exposure. You can see where the bulb is located after it and before the outboard. The ....

... 19 gallon tank is down in the laz. and once primed the outboard has had no problems drawing from the tank.

The tank install is here.....

I think we bought the filter for quite a bit less than the Defender price from onlineoutboards.com when we bought the outboard,

You could also get that adapter and filter with the water separator I posted about in the fuel pump thread for less than the Unikas and most others (about $30 something) if I remember right and that combo could be mounted inside. One nice thing about the outside solution though is that when you take them apart or drain them they are outside,

the unika is good. too.

I had a similar all metal racor, (if not the same on my) 200 merc. OB.

I don't think any of these filters are under any pressure.. -its a vacuum draw. (less than 3 psi). and even it they had pumps it should be under 4psi..

I've never seen a filter on the FI side of a pump. but guess the all metal could take it. FI = (~70-90psi!)

the metal one I posted should work fine.
-and should take more abuse than the unikas one.

but either will be fine.

both have a bottom drain, but the plastic one has clear viewing chamber...

call racor... bet it will work on vacuum pressure. that's all the merc had.

The normal pressure on a car is about 43-44 psi at the injectors, but like you said can be higher before that, but the marine pump is about 4 psi.

Here is the setup on my pickup...

...The left arrow points to the pre-filter with the pump in the middle and the smaller micron filter to the right in the picture. This pump creates considerable pressure that is reduced by the regulator on the firewalll and there is a return line back to the tank. It is good for 700-800 HP if I remember right, of course I don't have that much . I did put in two pickups on the tank sump so could also add a second pump and line.

That all mounts.....

...by the tank and is hooked to the sump that I welded into the tank, left arrow....

Hi Sum, is that the only pump for the FI truck? (small block chevy? blower?)
IIRC, normally what I'd see is a low pressure pump at the tank, supplying fuel to the FI distribution block where it is really pressurized for the injectors. (over 50psi)... -depending on injectors and engine flow.

anyway, my point is that the all metal (alum) would work fine with a vacuum draw, by the bulb. but as the specs indicate, it could be on the pressure side, since its all metal.

the clear plastic type is probably better if its not going to get hit by an anchor, or the OB as its loaded on the dink. Metal may take a hit better, or not... but either should work fine....

ps; nice job on welding the pickup on the stock tank! did you fill the tank with argon?

SBC. The pump (middle above) is a Bosch #044 pump and is the only pump. The lines run from it to this...

...regulator. You can run two springs in the regulator. I'm running the spring for a carb setup now but hope to go FI at some point and then I just need to change the spring. There is a fuel return line from the regulator and now with my present combo a lot of fuel is returned. There are 2 supply lines. Right now the two lines come from the single pump, but I could add another pump if needed and the sump in the tank has another outlet that is now plugged.

I've welded tanks before filled with water and such, but this time took the tank down to the welding shop and they purged it for me and then I took it home and....

... did the welding on it. I also cleaned the inside and put at sealer in there and repainted the outside.

I built a really nice motor with forged crank, rods, JE blower pistons with the intention of putting 1 or 2 turbos on it. Now I'm going to pull it out and use it as a test motor in the lakester and put a milder FI motor back into the pickup. I like driving it anywhere and want a really reliable simpler 350-400 HP motor back in it,
