2 stroke fuel question for the group...thanks

Hello: I was gonna buy a 2 stroke motor off a guy this week so I went out and bought a brand new gas can and 2 stroke motor oil. Added exactly 1 gallon plus the exact amount of two stroke oil to it so I was ready when the guy brought the motor to my house. He acted anxious when I wanted to start it...then told me this model needed regular 30 weight oil mixed with the gas. So I poured exactly 3 capfulls (cap off the top of my oil bottle) into the mix. Then he got really weird and I basically think the motor was a non-running scam..he picked up his motor and left...my question is..can I use this fuel in my johnson 9.9..it's mixed for it perfectly except, like I said I did ad 3 capfulls of 30 weitht (new) oil to it...what is the groups opinion...will this work? Am I safe to run this in my motor? ?Thank you, Stephen

No I would not use it in your Johnson engine.My suggestion is to put it in your car and dilute with as much gasoline as possible. 30 weight engine oil and two stroke oil are not the same and you can't safely substitute one for the other. However if I understand your statement you already have the two stroke oil mixed with the gas and also added the 30 weight. It will be "safe" in that the engine will get lubrication but you may foul up the plug from the 30 weight oil and could add gumming to the carburetor. I still stand by putting it all in your car and start out with the correct mix for your outboard.

2 stroke engines were originally designed to run regular engine oil, it's only in the last 30 years (?) or so that there was any distinction between the two (two stroke and engine oil)
It will not hurt the motor, but -may- smoke a bit more, and could foul the plugs a bit faster. It won't automacilly detonate any engine.

I wouldn't worry about running it in a 2-stroke outboard any more than I would worry about running it in a 4-stroke auto engine.

If you're worried about it, dump it in the gas tank on your car, BUT note that with the computers and EFI systems in most cars today there will be a slight performance decrease.

With my motorcycles, it's an annual routine to throw two-stroke in the last tank of the season, then on final shutdown turn off the fuel petcock and run it till it dies, that coats the valves and carb parts with a thin film of oil that keeps it ready to run over the winter. only drawback is an almost unnoticeable loss of power and a slight tendancy to smoke.

All it will do

All it will do in your Johnson is smoke a little more and possibly foul a plug. Will not hurt the engine at all. Don't know how much gas you mixed with the three caps of oil. It will be much less harmful in the Johnson than in a late model vehichle with oxygen sensors and all the other stuff they put on cars now.

Definitely do not put this in your car. Some additives in the two stroke oil mayl foul your cat converter in the car. It will be fine in your outboard or the lawnmower. If your Johnson is not a two stroke, dilute the mixture a little .. maybe with a half gallon more of gasoline to reduce the plug fouling.. same for lawnmower. It will be fine in those places, but not the car.

I'd dilute it a lot and then try it in your lawnmower first. If it smokes a bit it may foul the plug, but a fouled lawnmower plug is not a big deal. Fouled cat. converters or gummed up fuel injectors in your car could be a big deal money-wise and inconvenience-wise. Likewise your outboard. If it still smokes a lot in your lawnmower, there's always the weedwacker and/or leaf blower.

Just dilute it down and put it in ANY small engine you have, If the combustion chamber is intact you probably wont see any smoke.
If you put it into a 4 cycle engine the benefit will be that you will 'top oil' the engine .... lubricate the upper cylinder walls, valve stems, etc.

I 'top-oil' ALL my gasoline engines ... and regularly get 300,000+ (once got one to over 500,000) miles out of them (with some minor/major rebuild). The ultra-modern 2 cycle engine 'top oil' by automatic injection of the lube oil.

No need to be a 'chemophobic' with a gasoline powered IC engine.
