Apparently we must give right of way to the unmanned vessel. Hope the missing sailor was wearing a PFD. Lessons learned the hard way.

Solution to going overboard with autopilot on.
At least I think it is a solution. I have ordered a two channel remote switch that I can operate without wires. I have a switch for avoiding obstacles with a 30' plug in chord for my Tillermaster. I plan on using a wireless remote to active the autopilot. It only turns the boat momentarily. With it headed into the wind, I should be able to keep it there long enough to swim to it. At 4nm/hr I should have about 45 seconds to activate. To water proof the remote I plan on using a very high tech sandwich bag. I haven't field tested yet so don't try this at home. If I can get it installed by this Saturday I may throw Novelman overboard to test it.

The original idea was not for going overboard, but
for using in the channel where I frequently need to avoid buoys while on deck. I can get a lot done while coming down the channel on auto. With this I won't have to run back to the autopilot to readjust. The overboard benefit was an after thought. Frank

what a nice clean way to disappear...
Reading the link got me to thinking, wouldn't this be a nice clean way to disappear. Leave your wallet on board, engage the a/p, and step off the transom, Swim to shore, and go on your merry way. Conspiracy theorist, no, just too much time to think. Hope the missing man turns up, safe and sound.
