2 piece mast

I HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED A MAC 19.WITH A 2 PIECE MAST SOME MOVEMENTIS EVIDENT AT THE SPLICE BOTH FORE AND AFT AND SIDE TO SIDE.MY QUESTIONIS,HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH ,AND WHAT EFFECT WILL IT HAVE?I ASSUME THEREIS ALWAYS THE OPTION OF WELDING.THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.BRUCE

19 mast splice

I sail (and hard) a 1993 Mac 19' and mast splice movement is not a problem. Actually, the connection is the strongest part of the mast.When you have shrouds and stays properly tuned (see the boat manual) the mast performs very well.Don't weld, you will be spoiling portability (the best feature of the boat) with no gain.
