I just got my first sailboat, a 1981 h22, and I'm wondering if there is a way to step the mast with just 2 of us.... My wife and I. If so, what would it require. Thanks

There was a post here just recently about this and the suggestion was to make up a longer adjustable mast crutch that fit in the gudgeons where the rudder goes. We had one on our Catalina 22 and it worked great. It gets the mast up high enough to actually be able to get under it and lift. On that boat, raising the mast was from aft to forward.

My wife and I had a C22 and used this https://www.catalinadirect.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_ID=636

It worked great but was a real piece of crap after a few years around salt water. The telescoping tubes rusted together and could not be separated.

You roll the mast back on the roller in the fork and attached the mast to the tabernacle. You rest the mast in the crutch and extend the telescopic pole as high as possible. I would put one foot on the right cockpit seat and the other on the left and lift the mast as high as I could. Kind of like raising the flagpole on Iwa Jima. My wife would step up and we would exchange positions and I would move the the cabin top, grab the mast and lift it up. My wife would move forward and attach the forestay and it was up. Worked like a champ.
