We have a 1985 31 hunter, we have two issues, 1 the motor smokes (yanmar 2gm )when we start up, when we power up quick there will be a lot of smoke, but it will taper off and will come to almost a stop after running for a while, not problem starting, all gauges read good, no water in oil, does not burn any oil, fuel filter is changed every 50 hrs. Could it be our fuel is bad? or do we have bigger problems #2 we always have a head smell, pump out often, doesnt' see to help

you might want to have your fuel injectors removed

cleaned and recallibrated. Every few years, the diesel guys in my bay always have this done. A Yanmar does this or you can mail them to the best....Mack Boring. They have several plants around the nation.

Shutdown method.

Sheila: There is a shutdown method in the manual. After running the ehgine, you should let it idle in the slip or anchorage for about 5 minutes. Then you should rev the engine to 2000 rpms or so and pull the fuel shutoff. You may want to try this before having the injectors serviced. We have about 1000 hrs on our engine and have never had ours touched. The other thing is the speed that you run your engine. It should be operated at 2500-3000 when motoring. This is 70-80% of the max rated RPM. Try these things before you mess with the engine itself. There is no need to change your fuel filter this often, unless you have some very poor fuel. As for your head, check under the v-berth. If you have odor there too, you need new hoses.

Ehaust elbow

is always the first thing to check on an engine with these symptoms of smoking, etc. Easy check - easy fix - classic and famous problem to some - pull it off carefully and check for massive soot accumulation inside. If soot is there use a big screwdriver and remove it. Check it for cracks and corrosion. If that is not it, proceed to filters and fuel then injectors. Nobody ever seems to say this but me. It is expensive and probably just makes the mechanics a lot of money to remove the injectors and pump for symptoms like this. If you find the elbow is plugged, after you clean it, consider running the engine a lot harder and do not idle so much. Peggy will tell you about number two. My guess is the hose.

how much smoke?

Sheila, how much smoke? Diesel smoke! that is a given. So the question becomes how much smoke? If operating correctly, as your apperars to do, cold starting smoke is normal unless extreme, and if you throttle up guickly,it is unburnt fuel (black smoke)You have a engine that is almost 20 years old,how many hours are on it?You could in fact have another issue here but are you comparing it to a gas engine or another diesel engine.Did the engine alway act this way or is the smoke something new? unless exessive some smoke is normal,as far as bad fuel what does the filter look like when you change it is the black fluid in the bottom of the bowl? is the filter cloged? dirty? have you every added algecide or a fuel treatment to the fuel? In short unless very bad I would not worry about some smoke.Cloged exhaust elbow are usualy not a problem in fresh water but it is worth a inspection and replace if needed. You may want to have the injectors cleaned and recalabrated but get a mechanic to give the engine a look and get a hands on opion first and unless you can remove and replace injector yourself you will need the mechanic anyway. Good Luck and keep us updated as to what if anything you find!

RPM's ???

When you power up what is the highest rpm you get to? You should reach about 3500 rpm's @ top speed. If not, check the mixing elbow like the other "Patrick" mention.

Issues #2

It's the hoses! To check them, place a rag in some warm water then rap anyone of the hoses with the rag and let it stay there till it cools. Then smell the rag. If it smells the same as the smell you got, it's the hoses. Replaced mind this year and my smell is gone! It took 22 feet of 1 1/2" waste hose to do the job.

Bye The Way

Have you drilled a hole through your cabin liner in the (false) bilge to let out the trapped water that's in all H31's ? If not, do it, the liner is 1/4" thick, then an air space of 1/2", then your hull. Don't drill any deeper than 3/4 of an inch. Drill as low to the floor of the bilge as you can. Look at this link,
