I am getting an oil leak from the front housing and the main block. Nothing terrible but leaked a 1/2 quart in 30 hours of engine time. I tightened the oil pan bolts and the bolts that secure the front housing. Q1 is the leak mean a new set of gaskets? Q2 is 1/2. Quart in 30 hours a lot ?
Thanks
Mark

Clean and degrease the engine so you may pinpoint the source of the leak. They have a way of hiding their tracks. Q1, maybe. Q2, I guess it would depend in the period of time it takes you to accumulate 30 engine hours. If I were to consider a straight 30 hour stint I would say it is a bit much considering the total capacity in the engine. In my experience a lot of the leaks originate in the valve cover. Tightening leaking gaskets almost never works to stop leaks.

I had a 1985 Hunter 31 with a Yanmar 2GM20F engine. The seals were bad. The engine oil leaked into the bilge and from there got pumped overboard (not good). It was bad enough to see oil in the water but not bad enough to disable the engine. Took it to a Yanmar mechanic and it was a fast and easy fix. About $300 as I recall.

I had a friend that's a diesel mechanic came out last week and look at my Yanmar 2gm. We determined that it needed a pan gasket, a new oil line to the head, a new set of gaskets for the injectors, an impeller kit, new hoses, and a few crush washers.
We cleaned the engine with brake cleaner, let the engine run for about 20 min and found all the leaks like Benny said. We also found that a bolt for the exhaust elbow was missing a head. We determined that with the engine starting to show some signs of rust, it was best to pull it and do all the work on a bench. We're going to clean it and repaint it Everything we need along with 2 cans of Yanmar paint will run about $150 and my engine will be clean and new again. It starts and runs really good, it is just at the point that it needs a little TLC.

Mark, better to find out where the leak comes from first before taking corrective action. I had an oil leak which seems obvious to be from the sump pan (bought that gasket) until i wipe everything down clean and monitor. Found the leak comes from midway up the Timing Cover instead (in front of 2gm20f engine). Its an easy and interesting fix if you're diy'er.
