I've been reading a few posts on another forum concerning mixing 2 cycle oil with diesel fuel using various ratios depending on the size of the fuel tank. The results sound very positive with regards to improved lubrication for critical areas versus low sulphur diesel properties. Other bonuses were less engine vibration and less engine noise with no increase in visible smoke. A less expensive alternative to some diesel fuel additives, perhaps?

I stumbled on those, too. IIRC, the answer was that new diesel fuel already has the lubricants necessary without additives.

The need to supplement ULSD with lubricants is just another urban myth. As Stu said, it already contains additives designed to provide the necessary lubrication. Although in the short term, adding 2 cycle oil will probably do no harm but over time, I suspect it will distort the injector pattern requiring premature service.
If anyone thinks the petroleum industry would open itself up to such huge potential claims of damage to the millions of diesel engines in worldwide use by providing a damaging fuel mixture, take a second guess.

Remember, the boys that blend the diesel are in the business of supplying only the minimum of lubricant to meet a spec.. (what was the spec written to cover? also note that the spec was written with the help of the producers mostly to cover diesel trucks that hardly ever stop)The producers make dollars by not providing "give-away" .. Part B, not all batches are tested for correct lube additives.. I am not saying that you should use additional additives, just providing a little food for thought. (yes I used to do engineering work for the biggest oil company on plants that make diesel ... and yes I do use a little fuel lube additive in the old diesel engine on my boat) That said, remember too that the fuel provides for the average injector pump and provides only as much lube as was in the previous diesel blends. Again, I am only providing material for thought, not condeming the oil guys nor am I lobbying for the use of additives.

Thanks to all who have replied thus far. Think I'll just trust and stay with diesel fuel.

Bill are you on the estuary side of Alameda? (Unless you're the Bill a few slips down from me and I know you already...!!!) Once the Grand Marina fuel dock closed a bunch of years ago, the turn over at the fuel dock at Jack London Square has meant good fresh fuel. I've had no issues for many many years with their fuel. Pricier than lugging it from a gas station, but convenient.

Hi Stu, yup, two or three slips down from you. Fueled @ Jack London three weeks ago for the first time and was wondering. That's what got me thinking, and I agree, convenience is worth the cost.

Something else to consider is the combustion residue of fuel additives. Adding oil to fuels increases carbon fouling in the cylinder, at the valve seats, on the exhaust valves, and in the exhaust system. Additionally, oil in diesel fuel lowers the combustion rate a tad, lowering the cylinder temperature and increasing the amount of crud left unburned from the diesel fuel.
