With ULSD I've been a little worried about lack of lubrication. I've been adding a commerical lubricant but 2-cycle oil is cheaper. I saw a guy adding 2-cycle oil on the web. Anyone adding lubricant to ULSD and What???

not necessary

Other lurbricants are added at refining to replace the loss of sulfur in the new ULSD such that the new fuel properties are equivalent. If you doubt it, recognize that the refiners are perceptive enough to realize there are WAY too many diesel truck fleets on the road with all the reason in the world to file class action suits against "big oil" should any damage result from ULSD. I'd be more concerned with the possible adverse effect of clogging diesel injectors by introducing 2 stroke oil.

Big oil is not going to take the risk of damaging all those engines.

You worry too much.

I totally agree with Don. Diesel engines are my business. Keep sailing.

Everything has to burn in a diesel cylinder

If you had 2-stroke oil getting into a gas engine cylinder, the insides would soon be coated with carbon. I think there is more chance of the oil burning in a gas engine than in a diesel. So you would likely get more carbon deposited inside. You would get better compression though.

Diesels also do not like to be idled without load

on them for long periods. There can be incomplete combustion in the cylindar as another poster noted which would leave residue and build up. The diesel engine is designed to be under load so as to create enough pressure in the cylindars for proper combustion. PV = NrT, Newton's Law I believe. The only thing you might consider putting into your diesel fuel is an anti-bacterial fuel additive (Start Rite which is a blueish color and for about $10 at WM or equivalent to treat 250 gallons of fuel is a bargain). Why not just add some straight diesel fuel and anti-bacterial agent the next time you fill up and keep the engine oil clean. Good luck.

Some discussion on the WEB

If you do a yahoo or google search there is some discussion about ULSD and it's lower lubrication causing wear on injectors. New diesels have been designed for ULSD but most of us with old boats have old diesels that may not do well with USLD. I really like ULSD as it's good for the environment. But I want my injectors to last a long time and adding a lubricant is cheap insurance. 2-cycle oil especically the synthetic is designed to burn clean. Some others say that Biodiesel is also a good lubricant and even adding a quart of vegetable oil will work. Vegetable oil might sound weird but it was the original fuel for diesel engines.

Additive

I would not put two cycle oil in my diesel. If you think you need something get a good diesel additive, do not use oil or transmission fluid (as some like to do).
