I've read a lot about low sulfur diesel fuel not giving enough lubrication. 2-cycle engine oil is cheap and readily available almost everywhere. Would this help prevent excessive engine wear without hurting performance?? Has anyone tried this ideal?? A pint would treat about 6 gallons at 1:50 and that would probably be too rich. Maybe a pint to treat 10 gallons??? Tom

diesel

don't mix anything with diesel fuel. you will end up having to get new injectors, and a host of other problems.

Mystery Oil

Hi Tom, I use Mystery Oil - have for 25 years for small HP. Use suggested quantity and never had a problem. My father was Marine Engineer, he used it on every ship he sailed on - large HP, 40+ years. The small added oil lubs fuel pump and top of cylinder. No experience with 2 cycle oil as an additive. Regards, Bob

Seconds on Marvel Mystery Oil

I've also heard from more than one mechanic that a container of Marvel Mystery into the tank of diesel will make the diesel happy. I've done it a few times with no adverse effects. Also, I've been told that the left over gas/oil mix for the dinghy outboard can be dumped into the gasoline tank of your car. That will keep the car happy also. I do it at the end of every season when I put the dinghy outboard away for the winter.

What is Marvel Mystery Oil???

I've heard it mentioned but can't find out any technical information. It was recommended to be put into airplane fuel and engine oil. It seems to be a type of parafin oil. I know that 2 cycle oil won't hurt a gasoline engine. I have used it in my lawn mower 4 cycle engine many times when I ran out of gas and had pre-mixed available in the garage. The premixed is used for the weed eater and outboard engines. I e-mailed Valvoline so I'll see what they say. It seems that 2 cycle oil is high detergent and prevents carbon buildup in 2 cycle engines. Unless it eaffects cetane or something it would seem like it should work OK. Heck some people use vegetable oil in their diesels!!! Tom

Marvel Mystery Oil

Marvel Mystery Oil is a top cylinder lubricant, in older cars a can (quart) in the gas tank once a year is the best thing there is for breaking up all that sludge from not changin oil regulary. Not sure how it would do with newer cars with injectors or diesels. But its great for rusty bolts, and generally losining things up

Be careful on 2-strk fuel in car!

I read, but can't remember where, that gas mixed with 2-stroke oil will wreak havoc with the catalytic converter if burned in cars with them. I'd expect, even if it doesn't ruin the converter, it'ed void the warranty. Can't see a problem in a lawnmower, though.

Marvel Mystery Oil is an old time favorite,

for uses mentioned. Last vehicle I used it in was a '75 International Harvester so don't know about it's use with converters & injection. It was great for freeing up a sticky hydraulic lifter, a little in the crankcase, run till lifter quiets and then change oil. Also put some in gas tank twice a year for top cyclinder lube but don't know if this is real or myth. The shadetree mechanic would often use ATF (which is 5 wt. lube oil) for same purposes.

Old engine oil

Searching the web for info on 2-cycle oil in diesel I ran across references that truckers used to dump their old crankcase oil into their fuel tanks for disposal. Now this is supposed to be illegal, air pollution standards!!!! As a youngster I hung around some mechanics and remember them dumping oil into the carberator. Saw my brother do the same thing. Big clouds of blue smoke!!!! Of course this was pre-catalytic converter. I forget exactly what the oil was supposed to do. As to 2-cyle oil it is supposed to have a high flash point but will burn well at high temperatures. Supposedly diesel lubricates pretty well under normal conditions but under high load or very slow speeds it can allow metal to metal contact. Lubricants with polar groups attached that are attracted to metal surfaces seem to be important under these conditions. I don't know if two cycle oils have this type of lubrication.

Don't use 2 cycle oil in a diesel

Only use the rated oil as provided by the manufacturer for your diesel engine. Why would you want to substitute it? Price? Come on now. A few pennies more for the proper oil is a lot cheaper than the amount you will have to pay for engine repair.
