My Hunter legend 35.5 is powered by a Yanmar 27 HP which drives a 2 blade prop, I was told that a 3 blade prop will give more power to the boat. Has anyone changed props from 2 to 3 blades? and if so, what were the results, if results were favorable could someone give the manufacturer of the prop?, will I loose some speed by going to 3 blades? Thanks

You will loose some sailing speed.

Gene: This issue is a monthly occurance. Some think a folding prop is better, some like the feathering props. Others will tell you that you will motor faster in rough water with a three bladed prop over a two bladed. The other claimed advantage of the 3 blade over the 2 blade will be less vibration. Then we have the owners with a Campbell Sailor prop. I suppose that most of us motor a lot depending on our sailing grounds and the weather. I suggest you look in the archives and try to make head or tails from all the claims.

Under power

the three blade provides only positive benefits in my experience. Unless you are a serious racer you probably won't even notice any speed reduction.

Get the best of both worlds

Pay the bucks for a 3-blade feathering prop. Good gain in both motoring speed and maneuvering power. Under sail, it folds up to minimize drag. Cheers, Palmer
