We have a 1980 30ft Catalina with a 2 blade prop. It doesn't have much power or speed. I've been told that I could replace the 2 blade prop with a 3 blade prop but somebody else told me that it was too hard on the transmission. Anybody else ever do this?

Prop

I haven't heard that a 3 bladed prop is hard on the transmission and they are a lot of 3 bladed props out there, we would most likely have heard by now it that was a fact. I have a '81 C-30 with the small 11 hp engine and a 2 bladed prop. the 2 bladed prop has less drag and a lot less prop walk. The three bladed prop powers the boat better into big chop and currents. A large wave can almost stop my boat and it will take some time to get up to speed again. So if you are motoring against big waves and current on a Sunday evening going home it can be a long trip. But if you are a bay sailer like me the 2 bladed prop will still build up good speed and your boat will have less drag and less prop walk.

I have 3 blade

Previous owner had a 3 blade put on. I have the 5411. I can do 6.5 knots no wind or wave. Its nice. Prop walk is outrageous, but I have nothing to compare it to - this is my first inboard boat. I have the reciept for the prop in my folder, somewhere if you want the exact pitch, etc.... Cheers, Rob
