we just acquired a 1980 hunter 30 in desparate need of lots of TLC - one area in particular are the lovely cabin cushions which i would like to replace. Does anyone know where or how I should go about doing this??? i've looked online thinking that there are standard size replacement cushions but can't find anything. HELP!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Foam

If you are doing it yourself, this link was a good source for foam at a reasonable price. You call them to discuss what will work best for you. If you need to, you can glue two pieces together with a spray foam you can get from them also. You can reuse zippers from your old cushions. You should also use polyester batting , also available from them. The foam is easy to cut with an electric carving knife. I would make all seating and sleeping cushions an inch thicker than stock. It really isn't that hard a job. You can get Sunbrella on E-bay for about $6.00 yd if you look under BOAT, accesories etc. Hope it works out for you.

Did Several Boats Myself

After getting expensive quotes for replacement cushions on line and at boat shows I purchased a used sewing machine and copied the old cushion shape with new foam and fabric. I got four inch firm foam and zippers by the yard at and upholstry wholesale outlet. Looked at a lot of fabric and ended up by upholstry at JoAnn's (a fabric chain store) on sale for about five bucks a yard. Sprayed them with Scotchguard when they were done. I was very please with the results and total cost was $300 vs $1500.

I saved the old foam by washing it outdoors with a

of bleach and let them sit in the sun. I also went to Jo-Ann fabrics for a large lot of upolstery material. They sell zipper by the yard. It wasn't too bad making the cushion covers. Nothing too fancy, but new and clean! Simple used sewing machine did it all. I bought their translucent vinyl material for the undersides.

foam availability

look in yellow pages under foam and you'd be surprised how many people want to sell you foam. Just know the thickness and density and they will sell it in like 55" x 48" blocks x thickness desired or other sizes available place by place. Just start making phone calls.
