Cal Cal 33-2 cape cod
Mattapoisett "Spring around the bay" I brought aboard an experienced helmsman, 2 buddies from hockey team, and one daysailing friend. A great learning experience. Mistakes/lessons learned: 1) Lost 30 secs on start due to poor timekeeping 2) Old mainsail w/worn out battens affects pointing ability 3)Two minutes for course correction, followed wrong boat, trust gps. 4)Tune rig properly. 5) New bottom could've help shave off a few seconds. Benefits: too many to list, great day out sailing, motivation to improve boat performance and speed, and great exchange of sailing knowledge from local sailors.

Welcome to the dark side!

The Cal 33-2 is a great racer/cruiser. With some effort, you can make her a very competitive boat. I looked at a 34-3 when I was last shopping a few years back but decided on the Ericson 35-3 instead. I actually bought her at Brewers right there in Mattapoisett. She was red with an awful name "fidler on the sea". I have stripped the bottom, added a new headsail, learned how to properly trim the main(for optimal headsail perf), learned to sail the boat fast and now I win races. BTW, that main should not affect your pointing ability too much. The angle of your headsail on that rig is more important. Sheet it all the way in with properly placed fairleads and get the main out of the way and she should point nicely. Don't worry about making the sail too flat. This is just for you to see how high she will go. Then start playing with trim to get the best speed for the given conditions. Do you have the fin keel or the shoal draft? That can also affect pointing.
