So I’m looking at the engine on this 27 Hunter and I notice what looks like a crank case breather tube hanging down the starboard side of the engine. With some kind of knob on the port Is there a way to vent this smelly vapor to a filter or charcoal canister like on a car? I suppose one could route the tube outside the cabin but…..

I suppose you could do either, but the question is ... why? Sailing is all about freedom from the engine and lots of fresh air and breeze!

Go to "Owner Resources" on the top of the home page. Click on that then "General Downloads" then scroll down a lot to "Yanmar GM series Shop Manual Part 1".. Then scroll down to "single Cylinder Engines" .. go to page 72. The breather system is shown there and it shows how it is supposed to be connected to the intake port through the valve cover (bonnet) . There is a check valve in the valve cover that should be checked..

Hello I looking at the valve cover on this 1991 1GM10 Yanmar. Valve cover does not have a barb to connect breather hose. Hose simply hangs down and Looks like the road draft tube design like that found on pre 1960 Cars. Maybe this engine too old??

There is no hose barb, as shown on page 72, that hose should hook to a pipe on the underside of the cylinder head. The passage then goes through the check valve (PCV valve) in the valve cover, directing the vapors into the engine via a passage in the cylinder head. and into the engine to be burnt. Chapter 3 page 50. If that pipe is not under the head, then it should be replaced..

Hello there is nothing to hook up to. As it sits it looks like it was designed to just hang down and vent. Is see no sign of a pcv-like set up on this engine 1991?? I’m going to use a longer tibe and route it to a hole in the air horn that I will drill. See if I can find a brb fitting

My bad. I pulled off air cleaner cover and can now see what cloudy was describing. Clear hose coolant drain line for winterizing. Yes?

No, this drains the freshwater/antifreeze solution. To winterize you need to flush the seawater cooling system with an appropriate antifreeze.

It is just a drain valve (there are more than 1). If your engine is fresh water cooled (with a heat exchanger), you don’t use those…you will drain the AF out of your engine.

Winterizing the engine usually entails sucking a few gallons of the pink kind of AF through the raw water intake, through the heat exchanger, and out the exhaust.

Here is a (long) video of my winterizing process. Something to watch when you are bored…

Not sure if it will help, but I probably won’t hurt:)
