and smoking (white) at the top end. Motor ran fine two weeks ago. Took it out yesterday and it was hardly moving took forever to get to a max speed of 3.3 knots and it sounded very quiet. Smooth running but no power and quiet. If pushed beyond 2/3 throttle no speed nor RPM inrease but it would start to smoke. Replaced fuel filter with no change. Any ideas?

The common problem associated with these

symptoms seems to be in the exhaust elbow.

Bugs?

Since it was running fine a short time ago it's hard to believe the elbow sooted up in a couple weeks of non-use. Head gasket could have blown but, since you're in Florida, where there are plenty of bugs, have you checked the intake and exhaust for obstructions? Since the engine sounds quieter maybe you've got a mud-dobber nest in the exhaust hose?

Smoking?

By "top end" you mean RPM range right? If the top end of the engine is smoking you have a cracked head or blown head gasket. It it is smoking at highter RPMs then white smoke means anty leak and head gasket problems and black smoke means it is getting too much fuel or too little air. I vote with John and think mud dobbers or critters stocking up and using your air cleaner as a storage den.

the exaust elbow is the first thing to check

I beta buck its clogged up. dont try to clean it just replace it. Especially if you idle at the dock charging batterys etc.
