I have been having the overheat alarm on my yanmar 1GM come on after only a few minutes of operation. I checked the impeller and thermostat and they are working properly. I checked the exhaust elbow and it does not have any salt build up. I cleaned the raw water strainer even though there wasn't much algae on it. I am continuing to have the alarm come on after just a few minutes. The cooling system on this motor is very basic and I am not really sure what else I can check that may be causing the problem. Any ideas? chris

test the sensor

It may be that your have a bad sensor. Take it off and put it in a water bath on the stove. Use a candy thermoter and monitor the temperature that the resistance between the terminals (or if only one terminal the terminal and the body) goes to 0 ohms. It should be well above the engine thermostat opening tempertaure and below 212. Good luck

Did you check the raw water intake?

Chris: Have you checked the raw water intake to be sure that you are getting a good flow of water into your strainer. You also need to check the impeller to be sure that the hub and the impeller are still bonded. When they get old they can seperate. We just had a situation like this on a fellow sailors generator.

covering the intake on the hull is a posibility. Also, a long string of sea grass or ??? in the intake hose between the strainer and hull intake. I have had both problems.
