new at sailing

Is the 19ft. really a trailor-sailor.? We live 45min. from Sacandaga Lake and Saratoga Lake and 90min. from Lake George. We were hoping to save ourselves a slip fee. Also, how easy is the boat to get into the water? One article review claimed that they put the boat in the water and set up the rig in 20 mins. Daniel of Madison and Dick Leis of Florida, thankyou for your valuable input. Did you folks have an optional "camper canvas"? I am assuming that this is some type of tarp that covers the outside seats/sailing area to allow for more sleeping area, tenting style. I would think the folks inside, got the best "beds". You both recommended going a size larger. Would a 24ft be a trailor pull boat? Will have to look at the boats for sale Hunter page to see what the cost of the H240 and 23.5 might run. Locally, the 19ft Hunter is asking $6,000. Thankyou in advance for any info and ideas.

19 camper canvas

Here is a link to a photo of the camper canvas deployed. Yes, the 19 can be a trailer sailor. We did it for a couple of years with ours. At around 2500 lbs with trailer, boat, and gear (yeah we have a lot of junk aboard) it was a fairly easy tow with our Rodeo. You can become very proficient at rigging in a half hour. Like the earlier responses, I would have to say that it will be a bit crowded with 2 adults and 2 teens for overnites. The aft bunks are more suited for storage than sleeping and the Vberth requires the use of the cabin setees if you are more than 4'6" tall. The 19 is a fun daysailor for 4. We've had ours for about 5 years now and it is plenty of boat for the 2 of us and friends. Although I wouldn't invite anyone to spend the night!!

19ft. Camper...No!

In answer to your query, we have never attempted to do an overnight on our WB 19 and have no provision for setting up any cockpit tent. That would make real sense though, considering inside space.

Sleeping: possible, Trailoring: an adventure

Our '91 18.5 Hunter (winged keel, not water ballast) has always been kept at a dock, but we have towed it with our old Buick from PA to NY (Chatauqua) and to MD where it is now resides for weekend sailing. The quality of the trailor was excellent. Setting up is possible in 30 minutes for 2 nimble adults. Sleeping on a boat that size is not possible for the wife and I. Never got used to the rocking, the gas fumes, the lack of decent head, and the mosquitos. There's got to Super 8 motel around somewhere.

Trailoring Hunter 19

Yes, the 19 is truly trailorable. We had that same year 93 model for three years. We trailored from NJ to Chesapeake in MD often and with ease. We had a Ford F-150 with a 6 cyl then. It took us more than 20 minutes to set it up though, more like 45 at least. We really loved that boat, we sold it because we wanted standing headroom so bad. Hunter doesn't make that model any more, too bad. Also, we arranged to stay at a marina in NJ on the trailor, mast up, in the yard instead of a slip. We found a yard spot with a nice water view. Saved money on slip fee, and didn't need bottom paint or haul out. And the boat stayed new looking for the 3 years we had it. We really loved that boat.

H 19

Greetings! I've owned my 1993 H19 since 1996 and have had a lot of fun with her. Stepping the mast can be very quick but I like to take my time and make sure all is right before I hit the water. Concerning towing her, I use a 1993 Ford Ranger 4x4 with the 4.0L with an oversized rad. Pulling her is not a problem, in fact, I forget she back there sometimes! On the sleeping over questin, 2 is fine, 3 is tight and 4 requeres very good friendship under tight quarters. The pop-top with canvas is a must for head room but being 5' 4", this short sailor finds it a non-issue. Great day sailor with short weekend ventures. Since I often single hand, I have more room than I can shake a stick at. Fun boat for a good price. Cheers Frank Pain S/V Sea Sun

Trailer sailor

I have toed my H19 (wb1994) fifty to sixty miles at a clip. Never a long trip but never any trouble eather. I toe it with my wife's town car and it does just fine. Normaly I keep it on the trailor, mast up, at my boat club and just dunk it in when I get a chance to go sailing. It's great for weekends and docking at clubs and marinas but four adults have to be very good friends to sleep on it. Two is very comfortable. For four you might look at a 23.5 or a 240. They are all good trailorables but the 19 is tight for four. L&Pjjjj h19 Patricia Ann
