I just acquired a 1999 Macgregor 26x. I'm concerned about how much side-to-side play there is in the centerboard, especially noticeable when it is fully down. There is about a third inch of clearance between the centerboard and the hull. It bangs back and forth in choppy water when sitting still. I also have trouble raising and lowering the centerboard when under sail. I typically have to put the sails in irons, or turn about, to take the pressure off the centerboard before it will be free to go up or down.
Any feedback about whether this is normal, or indicates a problem would be appreciated.
