Does anyone know if there is some place I might find the aft cabin berth measurements for the 1993 Hunter Legend 40.5? I am looking at buying the boat and we're wondering if a standard sized mattress could fit or, in the alternative, what dimensions I could have one made to fit. Looking at a more standard rectangle mattress.

Thanks!

It is not a standard rectangular shape. It is longer than a regular queen, probably about the length of what would be a "California Queen". The forward edge (athwartships front) is quite a bit longer than the aft end against the aft bulkhead. The outboard sides (fore and aft direction) are curved following the hull shape in that areas. I'll try and get you some rough dimensions this evening. I just made some new cushions out of higher density 3 inch foam so I have them here at the house.

Hey thank you! Yes I know about the irregular shape. We just wondered if we could fit in a more "standard" shape mattress. Please don't go to any trouble, but thank you! Much appreciated.

Here are the dimensions I have on the new cushions that I cut using the old ones as a pattern.
The foward athwartships is 9 ft. The aft athwartships at the aft bulkhead is 5ft 10in. Both the port and the starboard angle in. The depth (forward to aft) is 5ft 5in. I would not spend money to have someone make an expensive mattress based on these dimensions given that yours may not be the same and mine may be off a little.

For comparison, a standard Queen Matress is 6ft 5in X 4ft 10in. I have attached a rough sketch. The solid line is the Hunter cushion and the dotted line is a standard Queen. I have also attached a picture of my cushions setting on a queen bed for perspective. Hope that helps. Keep in mind that you will have to access the hatch under the center cushion to open and close your propulsion thru-hull valve. It will be hard to lift a one piece heavy mattress to do this.

You might, and I say might only, may be able to fit a standard Queen mattress if it is not too thick (It has to fit under the "headboard" or you could move the headboard up some I guess. The critical dimension will then be on the aft end athwartships where the long edge of the queen would be. You'd have to center the mattress on the area and your headboard would then not be at your head at the foward end. You'd have a lot of "space not covered by a mattress. If you look at my sketch there is the queen in dotted line and you can get some perspective from that. There are companies that make "custom" mattresses for boats. Hope that helps you. The Hunter 40.5 is a great boat and can probably handle more than most skippers can handle in the way of rough weather.

That was EXACTLY what we were looking for. Thank you for taking time to do this. I personally was lobbying for a "topper" to go on the existing cushions and now that looks like the best option for sure to allow the access you mentioned.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

I replaced the aft cabin mattress in our 380 in just a few hours and it was inexpensive and oh so comfortable! We ordered a 6" memory foam mattress online along with a quality 2 blade electric knife. When it arrived we opened it up on the dock and let start expanding while we pulled the old cushions up to draw the pattern on the new mattress.
Now here is the funny part. In our haste we didn't cut the mattress upside down (has an angled area for the hull at the head), so when we got it down we actually had to install the memory foam on the bottom and we sleep on the dense supporting foam. Here is the great news!! Memory foam mattresses are notorious for not breathing and making you sweat. Because ours is upside down, the foam we are on breathes excellent and fantastic to sleep on. Now and then when we leave and strip it down, I just grab the mattress and slide it half out to the engine compartment and leave it to get fresh air under it.

Sweet Dreams

Hello: I have a 380 also. Do you remember where you purchased the 6" mattress and also the name / part number of the item? Thanks, Mike

Amazon: I went back and looked it up and actually we got an 8". I suggest a 6" because the 8" comes right up to the hinges for the lockers at your feet. The one that we bought was kinda expensive and I wasted the money. I would just get one for a couple hundred or cheaper and cut it in to fit. Carrie got abut 6 great pillows and we have top quality sheets and blankets. Makes a huge difference! It was a real pleasure to leave those pos cushions up at the dumpsters.

FYI - the queen mattress is just shy of a tight fit at the forward starboard corner next to the locker. Works well for me because I always need water bedside at night. I just drop my water bottle in the corner and it doesnt go anywhere

I used memory foam to improve my v- berth mattress last year. Solved the breathing issue with a neat pad beneath the foam. HyperVent Mattress Pad. Its is a 1 inch plactic that holds mattress off the deck so air gets under the mattress.
