We recently purchased a '93 Hunter 40.5 and have been trying to find details about the steering from wheel to rudder but haven't been successful. Any ideas about where we can find the following info? Thanks!!! Appreciate any insights!!
1) Is the linkage gear, chain or cable?
2) What type of maintenance should be done in general for all the steering components?
3) Is there a manual or document that diagrams all the steering details?

We understand the brand is Edson but don't have any info beyond that. Thanks again!

Yes, it is Edson.

Linkage is cable with a chain leader.

Cleaning, inspection of cable, check for tension, lubrication seasonally.

The 40.5 manual is available via this site but I don't remember where. Check the search function for it. The unit was a specialty one from Edson, so I don't believe you will find a total diagram nor service guide from them but the good news it is all from components that are still serviceable.

The cable and quadrant assembly is accessable by removing the cockpit cover in the stern of the pedestal.

Good question!

The manual is under 'boat info' at the top. Click on '40.5' then 'downloads.'

There is a nice diagram on page 45 of the pdf.

As Rick said, there is easy access to the cable. If I remember right, there are only 4 screws holding the cover / cockpit floor on. The ice box removes to gain access to the cable from the top.

The chain / cable assembly is from Edson. I had to replace mine about 4 years ago. A link on the chain broke. I haven't heard of that happening to anyone else. For me, it happened at an ideal time (last turn as I was going into the slip). The good thing for me is that I know it is in great shape now.
