With the help of many on this forum, we settled on a 1993 Catalina 30 MkIII Tall Rig w/ Wing Keel this past Friday.
We had started looking seriously for a C30 in September. Based on my research I was looking for a 1988 or newer C30 w/ Tall Rig and Wing Keel and one that would not be a project boat.
We found two we liked, made offers, one the owner decided not to sell, the other the owner went with a different buyer. I then opened up our search area and found this boat in Rhode Island.
A couple of weeks ago Scott T-Bird and I took a road trip and he helped me with a detailed inspection. The following week I drove back up to observe the static survey and had oil samples drawn for analysis. Back I went this past Friday for the full systems check and sea trial. All was well and I came home yesterday with the title.
It has the walk thru transom, bow sprit, 669 hours on the M25XP engine, PPS Dripless shaft seal, new interior cushions, newer sails (quality of build is questionable), U-shapped dinette layout, Faruno radar, ST4000 auto pilot, Autohelm Speed, Depth (not reading) and Wind (worked on and off) instruments and factory windlass. It came with a lot of canvass, some of which needs new stitching and a dodger that needs new windows. ( Good projects for my Sailrite sewing machine my wife gave me last Christmas)
Most of the electrical is stock and neat. It has the improved engine panel wiring. Only wiring that has been butchered is for the VHF.
My plan is to leave it where it is for the winter. In the spring I'll spend some time getting to know it and then bring it home.
Here are some photos.
