Hi everyone,
I've sailed a Catalina 22 for a number of years and have decided to migrate to a Hunter 19-2. We mainly sail on an inland lake with the occasional trip to Oriental, NC or possibly some of the waterways along the coast. The 19-2 seems like a much easier boat to rig, launch and sail in comparison to our Catalina 22 (which, due to some health related neglect on my part) has become a project boat. At this point in my life I would rather spend my time sailing as opposed to fixing, "one more thing," before I can take the boat out.
We keep the boat on a trailer at a marina, rigged up and ready to launch. Our typical day is spent sailing around, anchoring for lunch, swim, etc... We would now like to add our grandchildren into the fun (the other grandparents are mainly power boaters).
So - questions:
- I will need to trailer the boat home, around 150 miles. Do people trailer that boat with the motor (6HP Yamaha in this case) mounted or pull it off? The motor mount or transom is not original and seems fairly substantial, however, I always pulled the motor from the Catalina 22.
- does the cabin top have the structural integrity to stand on? (I'm 6'2" and weigh around 205).
- the boat doesn't have a furling jib, is there a brand specific fuller for this boat? My other boat didn't have one either, so, I'm used to hanging the sail on and changing the headsail on the water. However, as I'm trying to make things more simple, a furler would help
- the boat has been fairly well maintained and in overall good shape. Are there any particular things to look out for? Should I remove and check the stay attachments to look for corrosion, as an example? (Older Catalina 22s, like mine, are notorious for failure due to corrosion where it can't be seen).
- has anyone made or purchased a table for below or in the cockpit?
- is it difficult to replace the forward hatch window? It doesn't leak, but it looks as though there are stress (spider web cracks) on the interior.
- does anyone add an anchor roller forward of the anchor locker? Further, how do most store the anchor when you're sailing, does anyone use an anchor hanger mounted on the bow rails?
- finally, is the boat, "comfortable" to sail with two - four adults (or combination of adults and children). From looking it over and measuring, I don't seem to be giving up a tremendous amount of cockpit space in comparison to the 22. The mainsheet attaching in the center at the companion way is different for me, does that, "get in the way?"
