Good afternoon, I have the above boat and a plastic ring between the 2 rubber rings at the top of the selftaipling winch broke this weekend. Dose anybody have a service diagram for these winches? I'm looking at posted info and the cap says Barient 21-33 but I can't find a parts diagram or what I need to look for. Thanks

Post a picture, if you can. Someone here will have a link to a schematic. If you need parts you must realize that winch manufacturer has been out of business for decades. There was a parts source for the barlow/barient winches (http://www.arco-winches.com/barient.php) based in australia that may still be viable....but I'm not sure.

The really good news is that West Marine is having their annual 2 for one sale on all Lewmar winches... so if you have about $1200 or so you can pick up a pair of 40's, self tailing, for your boat. I'd jump on it if I were you. I know it sounds like a lot but it isn't really.
You might find something on ebay, but don't get your hopes up. If you want inexpensive replacements, go with pre owned, standard (non self tailing). There will be plenty available from those people who upgraded because of the Lewmar/WM sale. In fact I have an excellent pair of Barient 24's. 2 speed, non self tailing, chrome over bronze. Really nice winches. Make me an offer. To figure shipping, they weigh in at 14 lbs a piece. A well cared for winch will last forever. That's why you never see used self tailing winches on the market.

Hey,
I've got a 1991 30T, and I did this same thing to my winches last year. Email sales@huttonwinches.com and say you need 2 stripper rings for the Barient 21-33 primary winches. Each ring was $38 and shipping was $35 and took about 5 or 6 weeks. Once you get them, it's a super easy fix, just use a mm allen wrench. These Barient self-tailing winches are the best.

Thanks for posting that, Chris, it's useful for one of my projects as well.

Question for anyone who's replaced a winch. I have Barient 21-33s which are due to be replaced with Lewmar 40s whenever West Marine gets them back in stock.
The mounting holes for the Barients are on a 117mm PCD, while the Lewmars are on a 121mm PCD. Provided the holes actually line up that seems so very close that I might just be able to file out the existing holes and throw on a substantial backing plate. Does this sound like an ok plan or is it a recipe for disaster? If I don't have to go through the trouble of filling holes with epoxy and redrilling I'd really prefer not to.

Seems like a quick fix, but has flaws.
  • The enlarged holes will make the winch wobble when exposed to heavy stress
  • The enlarged holes will be more difficult to caulk and eliminate water drips
A better way is to match up as many of the holes. The outliers drill a new hole. Fill the extra holes with epoxy and gelcoat to cover.
