I recently looked at a 91 30ft. Catalina with a walk thru transaon and I am looking for opionions on this boat and how it sails and also how this boat would rate similar to a 30ft. Hunter (similar years). The broker implied that the walk thru transon was unusually on this model. I am looking for a cruiser for the family that I can also single hand when conditions are right. Thanks for your answers.

your asking

Catalina owners to compare their boats to Hunters. I bet most folks on the Catalina site are going to tell you they prefer the C30. as I would!

very unusual

Yes, that is very unusual for a 91' to have a walk through transom. I thought the walk through transom was only on the MKIII's ? One major difference with the hunter and catalina is the amount of interior space. We were also looking at both catalina's and hunters, but the catalinas had a much more open feeling and better laid out in my opinion. We test sailed a 88' Hunter 30, and we saw no major differences between that and our 90' catalina 30. Go with the one that was better maintained. Cheers.

PIcture yourself rowing away...

Ok, most folks these days motor their inflatables, but I still row my rigid dinghy 95% of the time (sorry, off topic!). Picture yourself as the owner, anchored in a cove, looking back at your boat on the hook. Which would you rather see, the Hunter or the Catalina? There are lots of things to compare spec-wise, but let's face it, sailboats are the most rational thing to own. Go with your gut - most people separate themselves pretty quickly. Enjoy the process!
