Folks,
I'm looking at two Beneteau's - a 1996 36s7 vs. a newer (and more expensive) 2004 Beneteau First 36.7
Does anyone know the significant changes between the two models? From what I can gather, in the 90's they made the 36s7 (a little more of a cruiser) and then in 2002 they came out with the First 36.7 (inspired by the Farr designed 40.7).
The 36.7 has a HUGE one design class following, whereas I cant find much out about the 36s7. Can anyone help me sort out the differences between the two - would anyone recommend one over the other?
Many Thanks in advance.
Chuck

Don't have a lot of knowledge about the 36.7 but I own a 1997 36s7. Surface comparisons will show that the 36s7 is definitely "cruisier" than the 36.7. The interior on the 36s7 is much more amenable to extended cruising. To my eye the interior design of the 36s7 is more of a statement. Designed by Phillip Starck, it is lush and beautiful. The 36.7 is more utilitarian (read lighter). The cockpit and deck of the 36.7 is much more "racy". Bigger wheel, cockpit mounted traveler, open transom. The 36.7 PHRF is approx. 78. The 36s7 is approx. 117. That is a significant difference. Of course, even at 117, the 36s7 is considered "quick" for a racer/cruiser.

If you plan to race both will fill the bill. As you can see the 36.7's handicap will be pretty tough to sail to. New sails, 6-8 crew and lots of practice....It comes down to the predominate use of the boat. I came out of a one design ultralight (Express 27) very competitive fleet. I wanted a comfortable cruiser that still had a nice turn of speed and looked "cool".

Good Luck

36.7 is faster and in my opinion a more robust a construction. Compare the decks on both boats and see how each one flexes under stress. Sail drive on a 36.7 is cool however long term (maintenance) could be an issue. The 36.7 has a lead keel that goes way down so depth will be an issue particularly when anchoring close to shore or ducking in to safe harbors when weather goes sour. The 36s7 has a 6'11" iron keel. Both are similar down below however the 36.7 you will find 2 1/2 bunks with nice cabinets. The 36s7 has 2 bunks and the interior woodwork is spectacular with some very cool design elements (rounded cabinets and doors with white Corian countertops + rounded doors and frosted glass inserts on all). The 36.7 overall a pretty vessel however the 36s7 is more beautiful with a sculpted deck and stern.

Both are nice vessels

Cruising? - Go for the 36s7 - $65,000 - 75,000
Easy to sail with fewer sail / rig adjustment features.
Traveler located at entrance to companionway.
Bimini is not a problem in install.

Cruise Faster? - Get the 36.7 - $110,000 - $130,000
Not as easy to sail with plenty of go fast trim features.
Traveler is big and located mid cockpit, wives will complain about bruised shins.
Bimini not as easy to install due to location of traveler.

Three keel versions were available on the 36s7. The 6'1" fin and the 4'6" wing were iron. The 6'11" fin was lead.
