Message: I have a tall rig 1990 Catalina 28 (hull #20) with a single (non split) back stay. Does anyone know what the proper back stay tension and shroud tension should be for this rig (actual lbs.)? Also, do you suggest adjusting the back stay first and then the shrouds? Thank you; Borchers@net1plus.com From: Brian K. Borchers

Shroud Tension

There is no specific setting. Back stay tension is always adjusted for the point of sail on performance type boats. Tighter for upwind, to keep the forestay tighter. Looser on off wind points, to allow more fullness to the jib. I set my backstay for upwind sailing, and accept the down wind virtues. Check Nigel Calder's Boatowners Mechanical and Electrical Manual, chapter 15 for information. Mike
