To: H35.5 owners, I am very interested in moving to a H35.5 but i am somewhat concerned about the later model h35.5s being somewhat heavier than the early models due to the addition of more wood below, corian counter tops, etc. Has anyone noticed a performance difference? Also, did Hunter make a change in materials in 1993 that contributed to the weight gain ? I personally like aspects of both interiors...the original models are a little brighter inside and the newer models are richer looking. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks, gerald

My 1992 H 35.5

I have the 1992 H 35.5. Regardless of the year, I think this a terrific boat all the way arouind and I've owned 6 sailboats before it! The only change I would make is a bigger holding tank, but then again maybe not. I did change to a 3 blade Michigan Sailer prop. for more maneuverability. I also like the split backstay instead arrangement instaed of of stayless. You are correct, the teak on the interior is much brighter on the 1990-92s . . the variety of teak they used has a name which escapes for the moment, but as you know there at least four or five varieties ranging in color from the darker Burmese to the lighter "honeytone teak" which is more gold color. Mine is sort of a orange/blonde, which some refered to a Spanish teak, although teak is not indiginous to Spain to my knowledge. The cabin is very bright and airy. My counter tops are a laminate and not Corian. I specifically looked for non Corian counter tops when I was searching for a 35.5, having owned a boat with Corian before. For one, Corian adds a lot of weight and I mean a couple of 100#s. Second, it is not forgiving; slam the lid to the refrigerator or down on your finger or drop something breakable on it like a bottle . . you'll get the picture. It also cannot easily be repaired or replaced as each piece is a slightly different color. if you want to drill into it for any reason, you will need to through bolt it with back up plates or washers as it will not hold a self tapping screw without using epoxy seizing. I don't know the advantage of it other than some people like its looks and I suppose it's an "in thing" for the momnent. My friend's 1995 version of the 35.5 is pretty much the same as mine, except for the wood color, Corian and fabrics and his has a built in microwave [which I think the former owner added]. No boat is perfect, but this is as close as I have come and would definately buy the boat again! For some rason also there seems to be more of a demand for the Legends and this boat in particular, so be prepared to pay the going price. If you have specifc questions about it, feel free to e-mail me. Fred Miller M Squared
