Hi Yawl! :) (Little nautical pun there!!)

Okay, I'm still working on my 1978 Mac 22 project; not far from launching it.

But today I found out about a 1989 Mac 26 that's available.

Ever since I got the 22, I've been looking at the 26's and thinking it was a lot more boat: roomier inside, etc. So I'm thinking about buying the 26 and having two Macs for awhile; eventually, I'll probably sell the 22.

I would appreciate any information and pictures you folks have on the 1989 (or thereabouts) Mac 26: inside and out.

Since this is the most knowledgeable MacGregor group in the Universe, I know I'm asking in the right place.

As always, thanks in advance!

(Going to work in an hour; back later tonight. Will check the site then.)

VBR,

Pat

the 89 is a D, and has high coming sides and the flotation over the vberth. -best year for a D, -imho.

its a lot more tender compared to the weighted centerboard. though...

-condition is everything.

can you sell your 22?

Look at owners boats on my links below and also check out Macs on Sailingtexas.com.

The D and S are very similar inside. Biggest difference I know of is the dagger board trunk on the D next to the sink/aisle. Flotation placement is a little different also.

Good luck,

Sum

Just scanned through various ads using Jaxed.
Is that the one for $4500?
It looks pretty good in the pics, but I noticed there is no mast in the photo:eek: - a possible deal breaker?? You would need to check into that...

Just got home from work tonight. Talked to the guy on my cel this evening. I'll try to answer your posts below...

Mr. B: Yep. It's a D with water ballast and a dagger board. Did some research after I posted this thread. Yes, it sounds like my 22 will be more prone to self-righting if I wash the sails; and for a rookie like me that could be a good thing. Something to think about, anyway. I haven't tried to sell the 22 yet, but with the way gas prices are going, I think I'll probably be able to when the time comes.

Sum: Yup to all of that. Will check Sailing Texas, but before work today I did cruise a boat sale site and got a good look at several examples of the 89 and similar 26's. Thanks for the well wishes!

MM64: What's Jaxed? I saw it on Craigslist, but there's no pics. (He's emailing me some soon, so he said. Not here yet, though.) He is asking $4500 and on the phone he told me it does have a broken mast and no main sail, so it sounds like we're talking about the same boat. Actually, I'm kinda wonderin' about that broken mast and missing main sail. Getting all sorts of scary visions about how that might have happened, and what might have happened to the rest of the boat at the same time.

So I'ma thinkin...a little larger and more spacious inside...but mine is adequate there, and probably a little more forgiving for a tyro like myself. He doesn't have a mast or main sail: could be hard to find here.

Will the mast and main sail from a 1978 Mac 22 interchange with the 89 26D?

A fleet of Macs? Why not? :D

Thanks for your help, guys. I'll post more when I know more.

VBR,

Pat

I'd offer $3500. assuming everything else is there.
its going to be hard to sell a project boat.
it has a engine, right?

get some pic's of the broken mast, also see if its bent.
it might be save-able. Id figure $600 for a new main.

probably a grand+ for a new mast.

So, how much more work till the 22 is ready to sail?

might want to sail the 22, while you wait for a cheap used mast...

Tender has nothing to do with self righting.

Tender is a term used to describe how a boat FEELS untill it takes a set and settels down on a tack, usually about the first five degrees either way.

Some sailors when comming from a 30 foot boat with a full keel and 5,000 pounds of ballast will call a Mac tender.

Without the long and wide keel of the earlier Macs the water ballasted boats roll a litter faster in that first five degrees.

I like the call it more sentive.

I say rig the 22 and sail it since you already have it, and begin rat holing funds for that 26.
When I first thought I wanted a big boat, I thought I would spend 3 or 4 K, in a fixer upper. I kept looking at pictures online and looking at boat specs. The 26 series boats, do cost a bit more than the smaller ones but I think you get more bang for your buck.
the water ballast lets you have more boat on the trailer.
By the time I found my boat a spent wayyy more than my original plan but I'm really glad I did. Now I have an almost like new (old) boat that already works, and I can concentrate on improving/customizing while I'm using it.
I'm a relative newbie to big sailboats and already had it out in 20+ winds one day, and while I did go back to protected water, I never felt like it was a problem for the boat. (I was single handing for the 1st time)

Jaxed is Jaxed.com (Thanks for Sum for turning me on to this site). You can do a broader search through eBay, CL, and Kijiji using this search engine. I happened to do a general search on Mac (for the boat you're talking about, he spelled it MacGreggor). He did have a couple of pics in the ad. Trailer seems to be a nice one. The pics he had didn't have a mast on the boat, so I figured something was up.

Don't get any response through Jaxed. I'm hip to the add on CL: that's where I saw it. No pics there though, and he hasn't emailed me any like he said.

It's a long drive to go see the boat in person; can you give me a link to where you saw the pics?

That dual axle galvanized trailer is worth something... (a plus over stock).

OTOH, it sits pretty tall on the trl... not a torsion axle.

it will need a steep / deep ramp or longer tongue... to keep the truck wheels dry.

Thanks to everyone who's tried to connect me with this guy's photo ad. For some reason, I'm not getting any pictures, but that's OK. I've been checking out that year M26D's and I know what they generally look like. Any more than that and I'd have to be up close looking at his hull anyway.

I'm concerned about the lack of a mast. How hard would it be to find one? How much might one cost? And then, it would cost an arm-and-two-legs to ship it to Hawaii (unless I luck out and find one here.)

Any leads / info you guys have on those questions would be appreciated, as always.

I'm gonna scratch around locally and see if there are any masts available.

But honestly, at this point Lynn and I are just about ready to put this one on the back burner and focus on our M22.

Still interested in this 26, though. If it doesn't sell, one of these days I'm at least going to have to drive over to Milolii and check it out.

Thanks again for the help!:clap:

Pat

Oh yeah, to buy new, it would cost a fortune. then add the hardware (if he has the old one that helps). we won't talk about shipping...

Best bet is to find a longer one and cut it down, FWIW, on the trailersailor board someone snapped theirs, and I posted 2 candidate masts. A hobie 18 or prindle 18 might be long enough. (28' IIRC)

if you can get the boat at the right price, and have room to park it while you wait for a used mast to show up on CL, I'd do it. Sail the v22 in the mean time.

you're in an area where used masts should show up. I see them all the time...

heres one but its too big too heavy.
