I have an '89 Hunter 28 “Haukuna Matata”, which I have recently purchased. Since the first time that I saw the boat I have noticed that she lists slightly to starboard. The only significantly heavy item on the starboard side of the boat are the pair of batteries, which appear to be factory installed. However, I have not been able to find any documentation supporting this. Can anyone help me by telling me the placement of their batteries on their similar Hunter 28’s? With this, if anyone has any suggestions on relocating the batteries to a new location that has proven to work better on this model please let me know. If you would like to see pictures of the boat please visit my boats web site at www.vfmagic.com/hakunamatata. Thanks, Terrance Maloney…

Same situation on boat

We also have a 1989 28' - Orion. The batteries are in the head area and with the cockpit locker and its contents and the same side, it does cause a slight list. We just try to compensate by storing as much as possible on the other side of the boat. Once the boat is loaded for the summer, it is not nearly as noticeable. It just seems to be the nature of this particular boat. It has really never caused us any problems.

Relocate

Very popular subject here on HOW. Look in the archives for “batteries 28” and you will see for yourself. After two years I am finally relocating and upgrading the battery bank. I’m adding an inverter and the small #24 batteries are not going to cut it. Relocating to the lazarette allows you to mount larger batteries (or more of them). The two that were in the head were nearly impossible to remove through the small opening on top (with the ’90 model). With them in the aft I can lift them out with the rail mounted crane I use for hoisting the binghy motor. And no more list!

Marc, caution here.

Marc: I have relocated two batteries to the aft lazarette on my H'31. Yes, it helped with the list too. Now the bad side is that it also induces more squat in the stern. Just be aware of this before you do a bunch of expensive rewiring.
